Found this on ZDNN:
IBM will announce two versions of its Travelstar notebook drives, the 60GH and the 40GN. The Travelstar 60GH drive can store up to 60GB of data and costs $429. The Travelstar 40GN drive stores up to 40GB and costs $225. Other capacities for the GN drive include 30GB for $199, 20GB for $139 and 10GB for $109. The Travelstar drives are available now, according to IBM.
Does anyone know where these new 60BG drives can be had? Screw getting a 48GB for $400 at newegg.com, if for $30 I can get an extra 12GB.

Yeah, The Register also reported that too.

New IBM HDD

The drives sound good.

It's time for me to replace my old and limited 10GB.

So much for needing to conserve hard drive space....
Actual conversation between UCLA and Stanford during a login on early Internet - U: I'm going to type an L! Did you get an L? S: I got one-one-four. L! U:Did you get the O? S: One-one-seven. U: <types G> S: The computer just crashed.

Definitely. With 60 gigabytes of space, only pirated software and movies could fill it up. But we don't do that around here at MacNN, right?

Hehe...Well for me, I manage my 40gigs of full mp3 albums. ANd then comes video editing. Lemme say, I have to work with at least 5 -10 hours of dv. every hour =12 gigs...200 gigs would be nice to have. 60 gigs seems to be almost a bare minimum to use...but anyways...

you can't seriously be serious can you?

60GBs isn't exactly "big" anymore.

Well, I take that back. Some of us (like me) do DV editing, and that takes up quite a bit of room on the disk. I still don't think 60 gigabytes is enough storage for DV, but for a prosumer, I think it's plenty.

I use two 60-gigabyte, 7200-RPM IBM drives in FireWire cases at the moment.

I was looking at this model: IBM 48.0GB Notebook Drive 12.5MM [07N6718] IC25T048ATDA05 HDD (just for reference http://www.gogocity.com//product_det...VL6CAWLHW6CE1)

It refers to 12.5mm, while the other smaller models refer to 9.5mm.

I assume this i thickness. Can anyone just verify that these will fit into a Titanium?

Thanks!

Well, It's available on the TiBook as a build to order at the Apple Store. Does that answer your question?

are these new drives spinning at 5400 or 4200 rpms? If they are 5400 then why is IBM releasing one at 40GB when they already have a 48GB drive? doesn't make much sense to me.

I just spoke to a retailer that has the 48GB drives in stock. I asked what he thought the ETA on the 60GB would be....he estimated 2 months. We discussed the fact that IBM said they are now available, and he said, "Yeah, but only in their ThinkPads".

It is speculation, but the guy seemed to know about it....

Damn, I really need to get the 48GB drive very soon, but I know the prices will plummet the week after I get it. C'est la vie.

The 6B drives are 12.5 mm tall and 5400 RPM. The 40 GB drives are 9.5 mm tall and 4200 RPM.

hmmm...

I expect new notebooks in 2002. (not new enclosures, but substantial updates) I wonder if the powerbooks will get 40GB across the line with an option for 60GB. With a 9.5mm height, even the iBook could get a 40GB option.
Apple: bumping prices, not specs.

once the 60GB drive is available for those who don't use stinkpads then Apple should make the 48GB drive standard in the powerbooks while making the 60GB drive an order option ... but i know that's asking too much.

60 gigs is definitely not enough for serious video editing...but it's a good start! If you add another external mini-Firewire drive at 60 gigs (bus-powered, real small form factor) then you've got 120 battery powered gigs that you can fit in your bag. Not too shabby. Wait another year or so, and I bet that ceiling would be up to 160 or 200 gigs...all on a sleek little laptop.

Life is good....

you should keep in mind that Fujitsu announced several months ago that they would have a 100GB notebook drive around Christmas

Ooooh. Two pieces of vaporware for my stocking!

I'll believe it when I buy it.

When was this announced? Why didn't MacNN report on it? What're it's specs? Will it fit in the TiBook?

...
Can I ask any more questions?

Well, if you read the Cnet article, it doesn't seem like anything really big (80GB+) is coming anytime soon. And by soon, I mean less than 6 months.

I guess my 12GB Pismo will have to wait a while until these storage monsters become available.

I still prefer the sound of the IBM hard drives to any other drive on the market.
