Does anyone know how much memory this computer can handle?

The 6116CD was basically a repackaged PowerMac 6100, sold under the Performa moniker with a monitor and printer usually bundled with it. Quite a nice setup.

Anyway, the published limit is 72 megabytes, if I'm not mistaken. That system used 72-pin SIMMS that you had to install in pairs, which were (and are) rather expensive. Another interesting thing to note is that there is 8mb of memory permanently soldered on the motherboard, so take that into account when shooting for a memory upgrade.

The system has only 2 72 pin SIMM slots. They can accept up to 32mb SIMMS on each bank, so it's correct a total of 64 mb plus 8mb on-board RAM equals 72mb. I have seen the 64 mb upgrade available for $44 at www.sourceinternational.com

To answer your previous questions, is upgrading this 6116 worth it? Well it has only a 66mhz 601 processor, a 2X CD-ROM drive and likely not more than a 500mb hard drive.

There are upgrades for the Processor (Sonnet or Newer). CD-ROM upgrades, and hard drive upgrades. You decide if its worth the cost.

You can use it with early PowerPC software, like Office 4.2, older games, but it is too slow for new things like MP3, and other multimedia intensive things.

Even though Apple doesn't support it, you can use 64MB SIMMs in the 6100 series. This will give a total of 136MB.

It can play MP3s fine, even without upgrading the processor. I wouldn't recommend trying to do anything else while listening though. I have three 6100s. One of them has a 300MHz G3 upgrade. I used to use my 6100/66 to play MP3s in my bedroom, but it was too unresponsive while playing (if I tried to change the song, it would take about 45 seconds to do it), so I put my 6100/G3 300 in instead. The other two 6100s just run SETI now. All three have 40MB of RAM.

I have my 6100/60 running SETI, too, under OS 8.1. What OS are you running kbbaucom? How long does it take for your 6100's to complete a data unit? Just curious.

I also have my 6100 running as an email server - works great.

I have 7.6 on the two non-upgraded 6100s. I have 9.0.4 on the G3 6100. The 300 G3 6100 takes about 30 hours, or a little less. That's while it's playing MP3s 24/7 too. The non-upgraded ones take over 100 hours. I don't run them any more. I recently moved, and didn't feel like setting up 4 of the 7 computers I used to have running. I only have 3 up now.

I have a 6100/60 that I am using for MP3's now- the only upgrades have been HD and CD-ROM drive. It's got 72mb of RAM, Mac OS 8.6 and the Cabrio player. Nowhere near the funcionality of iTunes, Soundjam or Audion, but sounds damn good and performs great- no skipping or hesitaion. Mind you I'm not rendering Toy Story 3 in the background, but doing basic things like browsing the file system do not have a noticible effect.

On the original topic, 128 MB simms can be used for a total of 264 MB.
