The current chief operating officer of Intel will become the chief executive officer of Intel on May 16th, according to an announcement from the board of directors. Brian Krzanich will take over from the outgoing Paul Otellini, and will become the sixth CEO in the company's history, while Renee James has been elected to be the president of Intel on the same date.

Krzanich joined Intel in 1982, reaching the position of COO in January last year after progressing through a number of roles in the company. As CEO, Krzanich will have to help the company refine its mobile strategy as the smartphone market continues to opt for ARM-based processors in Android devices, though the Intel Atom platform is starting to gain traction in some markets. Krzanich will also need to work out how the company can reverse the failures of its PC Client and Data Center groups, both of which lost revenues in the recent quarterly results.

"I am deeply honored by the opportunity to lead Intel," said Krzanich in a statement, continuing "We have amazing assets, tremendous talent, and an unmatched legacy of innovation and execution."

Current CEO and president Otellini will be stepping into the role of an adviser to the management team, continuing his 40-year association with the chip producer.

New president James is said by Krzanich to have a "deep understanding and vision for the future of computing architecture, combined with her broad experience running product R&D." James has been the chairperson of a number of Intel's software subsidiaries: Havok, McAfee, and Wind River. She also currently serves on the board of directors for Vodafone Group and VMware.
