The backlash seems to be coalescing around “guilty until proven innocent” and how the same punishment is being dealt to a pretty huge spread of offenses.

Yeah, it seems like if you raped a bunch of people and all that happened was you lost your job, you got off pretty easy.

The complaint I've heard is that the butt-patters are losing their jobs, but the rapists aren't.

Right, but the problem is two things:

First: The system has done a poor job finding the guilty. Trial by media isn't great, but so far journalistic integrity hasn't created any verifiable false-positives yet. In fact, most cases involve multiple accusations.
Two: What do you do with the accused during the interim? Suspend with or without pay? In the political sphere neither is acceptable because of the political ramifications of a vote being missing for months.

The reason I wanted Franken to resign is because the system can't be trusted to investigate him in a fair or timely manner. Give me an alternative.

We're getting a little far down the totempole if the "man with power" is now James Franco. What pull does he have? "If you won't, I'll make sure you're not the implausibly hot woman Seth Rogen makes out with in his next movie!".

He just wrote directed and produced a movie. A lot of inherent power there.

That's disregarding latent star power. Remember what our president said: if you're famous they'll let you do anything.

I know that he is not a nobody, but if he directs one movie a year, he can influence employment opportunities for one movie a year - an indie movie with maybe two speaking parts for women. Weinstein killed careers by making women unemployable in all movies forever.

It actually wouldn't surprise me all that much if Franco is a creep, but his transgression (if all of this is true, he maintains his innocence) is so much smaller than a Weinstein or a Cosby that it doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence.

Harmon popped up in the SMD. Him talking about the incident on Harmontown is making waves.

I’m getting a little tired of creep assholes telling me I need to use their shittiness as an opportunity to look within myself.

I’ve been doing that already, which is why I’m not a creep asshole.

Tangentially related: http://www.kmov.com/story/37240190/g...marital-affair
ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -- Governor Eric Greitens on Wednesday night confirmed to News 4 he had an extramarital affair, an admission a months-long News 4 investigation prompted.

In a recording obtained by News 4, a woman says she had a sexual encounter with Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens and that he tried to blackmail her to keep the encounter quiet.

The details were provided to News 4 by the woman’s ex-husband, claiming the sexual relationship happened between his now ex-wife and Greitens in March 2015. News 4 is not naming the woman and she has not made an on-the-record comment about the story.

According to the ex-husband, the recording was made just days after Greitens’ and the woman’s first sexual encounter. And also that Greitens took a photograph during the encounter to use as “blackmail” according to the ex-husband.

That one has the added wrinkle of the fact that her guardian on set reported her suspicions, and they were ignored.

Should this guy resign?
https://www.npr.org/2018/01/24/58015...-as-a-soul-mat
Throughout the interview, Meehan seems to be trying to rationalize the way he pursued his staffer as somehow acceptable because they never had a sexual relationship and he felt a genuine connection with her. The married congressman and father of three denied any harassment on his part.

Meehan said he told the Inquirer that he saw his aide as his "soul mate" and that he had developed a deep "affection" for the much younger woman "in a way in which I was struggling to make sure that I would never put that into our professional relationship."
"I've been up front that while we worked together, that there was a growing affection, that I wanted to make sure. ... that I would never cross that line," Meehan said. However, he admitted that "it was something that, from time to time, I struggled with."

Meehan told The New York Times that he felt as though the young woman had "specifically invited" their communications and relationship.
Still, he admitted to the Inquirer that when she started dating another man seriously, he acted "selfishly." Meehan said that if he was acting "rough" in his office or lashed out at all, it was driven by stress he was experiencing over intense votes last year, including GOP efforts to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare.

The congressman invited his aide out for ice cream, at which time he planned to tell her about his feelings.

"I started to talk to her about my reaction to (her new relationship) and you know, selfishly I was thinking about what this was going to mean to me," Meehan told the Inquirer, "that she was leaving and that this was going to change the dynamic which was very special in my office and also somebody that I was emotionally close to by virtue of the time that we spent together in seven years."
I like using Obamacare to deflect responsibility here.

I think acknowledging the selfishness is a good step to being selfaware... I'd want to hear her side to see how far he took it. If there was no touching or pressure for that or manipulation of the job role... What exactly is "being rough in the office?" Yelling for no reason, being a grouch, or throwing things? Hostile environment? Being invited out for ice cream sounds innocuous, and something any boss would do for a staffer.

We need to make clear that pursuit itself isn't always the problem (or else cue the "NOW WE CAN"T DATE ANYONE" whines) but the reaction to being turned down that is the turning point.

Hillary is gonna have quite the legacy.
https://www.cnn.com/2018/01/26/polit...ent/index.html
Hillary Clinton decided not to fire a senior adviser on her 2008 presidential campaign who had been accused of sexual harassment, against the recommendation of her campaign manager, two sources who worked on the 2008 campaign tell CNN.

A female campaign staffer had accused Clinton's faith adviser, Burns Strider, of harassment that included inappropriate touching, kissing her forehead and sending her suggestive emails, the sources said. The woman shared an office with Strider.

After hearing of the complaint, Clinton campaign manager Patti Solis Doyle and other senior aides urged Clinton to fire Strider, but Clinton declined to dismiss him and kept him on for the rest of her failed run for the Democratic nomination, the sources said.
A faith advisor none the less.

Casino mogul Steve Wynn stepped down as finance chairman of the Republican National Committee on Saturday, becoming the latest powerful figure to surrender an influential post amid allegations of sexual misconduct.
Wynn’s resignation came a day after a Wall Street Journal report that included interviews with dozens of people who have worked at his casinos or had been informed of his alleged misconduct, including accusations that he pressured some employees to perform sexual acts.

Uma dropped the hammer today.

Weinstein gets the brunt of it, but Tarantino gets called out for forcing her to do a driving stunt on Kill Bill which ended with her plowing the car into a tree. Tarantino has allegedly been keeping the footage away from her, but she was able to get her hands on it, and it accompanies the article.

I read Tarantino’s response, and my sourness has evaporated. The Times article gave a pretty distorted view of the situation.

As an example by way of an edit I’ll need to make, Tarantino did the opposite of keeping the footage from her, he was the one who gave it to her.

Frankly, the road did look pretty straight and she looked shaky as hell even before the only turn.

I'm not ready to put "ADD director made bad filming decisions" in the same camp as assault.

Tarantino said she was just good enough of a driver to get a license, but that was the full extent of her driving skill.

However he makes clear he knew that, correctly notes it was his job to judge it, and fully admits it’s on him for judging wrong.

Overall, the way he views the incident is exactly how I would want him to. He considers it the worst day of his both his career and life, because his friend put their trust in his judgement, and he judged very, very wrong.

Someone feeling this way wouldn’t try to keep the footage from her, which is the impression the article gave.

Uma blames others for that, but they’ve lawyered-up, so the Times redacted their names from Uma’s quotes, leaving Tarantino holding the bag... because he didn’t get a lawyer since Uma’s not mad at him.

Lovely example of the Pulitzer-class writing we can expect from the paper of record.

This is unbelievable
https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifes...935_story.html
In a lengthy article published Monday, the Las Vegas Review-Journal acknowledged that it knew about sexual harassment allegations surrounding casino mogul Steve Wynn and his Mirage Hotel in 1998 but spiked the story for unknown reasons.

The newspaper had court records and other documentation about harassment allegations involving Wynn, who later became the finance chairman of the Republican National Committee. It even took the unusual step of paying for lie detector tests for two women who said harassment was common at the Wynn-owned Mirage during that time.

Yet the paper never published the story.
The reporter of the 1998 story, Carri Geer Thevenot (who is now the paper’s metropolitan editor) told her newspaper that she kept her file of notes, documents and interviews from 1998, including a printout of the story itself. “I always wanted to tell these women’s stories,” she said in the Review-Journal’s article on Monday. “That’s why I saved this file for 20 years.”
She kept the receipts. Thats why we know this now.

The ability to operate in total bad-faith all the rime is remarkable.

Even more remarkable is how many journalists pretend not to see what’s happening.
I feel like Laminar or someone else commented on how accountability between the parties is asymmetrical regarding these matters.

While the Republicans may not appreciate the implication, if I’m being frank, I’d say the parties have asymmetrical beliefs about gender roles.

They don't have asymmetrical claims about who cares about women, so its moot.

Also, I don't think the GOP thinks women should be sexually harassed.

That has nothing to with your first statement: "I’d say the parties have asymmetrical beliefs about gender roles."

If anything it reinforces mine: "accountability between the parties is asymmetrical regarding these matters"

I could have explained that better.

The accountability isn’t asymmetrical because the GOP doesn’t think men should be accountable for Franken level shenanigans. They consider putting up with that as part of a woman’s gender role.

The GOP is the party of chauvinists, doesn’t it stand to reason they’d have different standards?

When we find out a politician was a closeted homosexual, don’t the two parties react differently? I assume this isn’t the kind of asymmetry we’re talking about.

Edit: to clarify that last sentence, I mean the Republicans act differently to a Republican coming out of the closet compared to how the Democrats react to a Democrat coming out of the closet

Back in the good ol' days, you could give your secretary a hearty slap on the ass (before firing her for getting too old or putting on a couple of pounds), complain to your colleagues about those uppity n-words that moved in next door, and polish off a fifth of Jack before lunch. Unfortunately, white men nowadays are so oppressed that we can't do any of those great things anymore. I sure wish someone promised to make America great again.
