I see people ignoring the "famous" in the topic. As far as I'm concerned, there is one that stands head and shoulders above all of them:

"Smoke on the Water" Deep Purple

Everybody knows it, everybody who has ever played electric guitar has played it, but hardly anybody knows any of the lyrics aside from the title.. To hear them sing it is like.. "mumble mumble Smoke on the water, a fire in the sky.. mumble mumble.."

Favorite rock song seems to be a more popular topic though!

the most famous song (as in "known to many people", not nescessarily liked) would have to be "Stairway To Heaven" by Led Zepplin.

I think Queen's "We Will Rock You" should be on the list of most famous. Right up there with Bohemian OSX.
