I have 2 Macs on a LAN.
I can SSH between them.
I'm using 10.3.2.
I can't see the other Mac on IChat Rendezvous, as a printer (although they show up, they then can't "resolve"), and I can't "Network" for file sharing.

I manually assigned the IP addresses, Router, Mask and DNS.

192.168.2.6 <--mac #1
192.168.2.71 < --- mac #2
192.168.2.1 <---- router
255.255.0.0 <---- mask

I can browse the web just fine from either Mac.
I can SSH between them.
I can ping between them.

What does Rendezvous need to work?
Is there an enable someplace that I may have clicked off?

Two places I'd check are the Sharing pane in the System Preferences and make sure that the appropriate buttons are checked off (I'm not at my Mac and can't recall exactly what it should be).

Second place is in the Directory Services app (under /Applications/Utilities/). Make sure that Rendezvous has a check box in front of it.

Rendezvous is checked in the Directory Access utility

Under the Sharing pane of system preferences,
Personal File Sharing
Remote Login
Printer Sharing

are all checked

Windows Sharing
Personal Web Sharing
FTP Access
Apple Remote Desktop
Remote Apple Events

are not checked.

Thanks for trying.

problem may be solved.

I don't understand this but the NetGear dual speed 8 port 100/10baseT hub seems to be blocking some IP traffic including Rendezvous. I used a different NetGear hub (this a single speed 100baseT 4 port hub) and everything works.

Thus the 8 port model is useless for my network. I wonder if this is configurable. Guess it's time to go to netgear.com

The "hub" that isn't doing Rendezvous is an FS108 dual speed switch.

ok. apparently setting the IP addresses of the computers to 10.0.0.x and setting the mask to 255.255.255.0 fixes the problem with the switch.

I still don't understand but I'm up and running with my original equipment.
