I've got my new PowerBook 12" 1.5GHz SuperDrive on February 3. It was not until two weeks later that I realized that the SuperDrive is defective. There's no problem reading or writing CDs or DVDs. But after burning some 20 CDs/DVDs I realized that the drive capture mechanism consistently scratches almost all disks that are inserted (to read from or to burn onto). The pattern of scratches is almost the same on all disks - several short parallel scratches in the outer half of the disk that go in the radial direction.

Anybody else has the same issue?

The model of the SuperDrive:

MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-835E:

Manufacturer: MATSHITA
Model: MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-835E
Revision: GAN7
Serial Number:
Drive Type: CD-RW/DVD-RW

No replies? Am I the only one lucky? Oh well. I'll call Apple on Monday and see what they say. Probably the only choice they'll give me is to repair. Although the problem existed from day one, I do not not hope that Apple will honor a replacement now, three weeks later.

So far my luck with Macs was only 50%:

iBook 500 - no issues in 2 years
iBook 700 - 3 logic board replacements and other smaller endless repairs
12" PB 1GHz - no issues in 14 months
12" PB 1.5GHz - defective SuperDrive. What's next?

I assume that reliability of Apple laptops is higher than 50% and I am just "lucky".
