Tear Off Finder causing crashes

Got a Powerbook G3 400mhz with 196 megs of ram running OS 9.0.4. Was working great till last night and now when I use the tear off function of the finder, the machine crashes. I trashed the finder preferences which had no effect. Any suggestions?

delete the AppSwitcher Preferences file and reboot

I told the doctor that it hurts when I do this.
He said don't do it.
If tearoff menues crashes the machine, don't tear off menues.

Nope. Deleting preferences and re-starting didn't do it. I'm going for the "turn off that extension" solutions. I wish Apple would fix the damn OS though. That and file synch are both cool features which crash me all the time with no third party extensions to blame. I'm hoping for an OS 9.1 that rivals the stability of 8.1 that's on my workhorse desktop. Never crashes.

there is a public folder on this idisk: the beatles (it's slboett's idisk, he is a member of our fora)
the public folder has an AppleScript app that will delete a mess of pref's files, according to your desires
i will swear that your problems re: AppSwitcher can be fixed by deleting a mess of pref's files... it is less than scientific and is a shotgun approach but i swear it will work for you if you just try deleting a few different combinations of pref's files!
 keep at it!

wlonh, how is it that SO MANY problems are caused by pref file problems/ can be fixed by deleting the proper pref's files? does being in the prefs folder corrupt files or something? 
or do I have to just believe...

well it is conjecture as to exactly why as i have never read nor been told why pref's get zotzed...
chalk it up to MacOS, it is one of its quirks and has been forever it seems
i deal with it happily, it is not much of an issue for me
oh and rebuild the desktop regularly using techtool freeware (this comment meant for the poster of this thread)

The application menu on the far right. Click on it, hold the click, and drag downwards. When your held click goes below the end of the menu, the menu will tear off and become a small window.
The small window will have buttons for all current applications. You can jump between applications by clicking in this window. Closing the floating window will get rid of it.
