Powerbook G3 and OS X

Has anyone had any install issues with all versions of System X and a Powerbook G3 (Bronze)? I have tried to install both 10.1 and 10.3 on this machine and it will stick during the install process, or give me the black box telling me to power down the machine. Could this potentially be bad RAM?

This depends on whether you have a Lombard (no firewire) or a Pismo (with firewire).
The Lombards have had serious problems with 512 MB of RAM installed and OS X. If you have a Lombard with 512 MB RAM, this is the problem. 384 MB is the Lombard's limit.
The Lombards have also had overheating problems, that usually become apparent when using OS X. OS X could be overheating your old tired hardware.
If you have a Pismo, it should be fine with 512 MB RAM.
In any case, remove all RAM but 128 MB, and do the install.

It did have 512MB of RAM in it. Will I be able to reinstall all 512, or will I have to find a 128 module from somewhere else?

It had 2 256s in it. I removed the top one, still freezing, but progressing more, now I removed the bottom one. Getting rather frustrated with this machine.

nope no issues lombard running 10.3.5 w/ 384 megs and a g-3 400
|

Related Question - how much HD space would OSX require? My lombard has the orig. 4GB hard drive and 320MB RAM. is it advisable to put 10.2 on it (currently running os9.1)?

Is the fan to the lower left when you open the keyboard the only fan? It is never coming on, I am supposing this may be part of the issue too. It is certainly a heat issue because I got the install to work by placing the laptop in an open window on cold marble when it was around 35 degrees outside. Would this lack of fan cause OS X to stick with no way to recover, because I am getting this now.

If the fan isn't coming on it could be the problem.
