I'm setting up a folder at home to access when I'm away. By default, when you add a folder, it adds these users:

You: Read/Write
Unknown: Read Only
Everyone: Read Only

You can delete Unknown but you can't delete Everyone. That's ok until you try and change Everyone's access:

Yes, boys and girls, you give the entire planet access to your shared folder with no way to change it from that dialog. Yeah, there are Terminal ways to fix the problem, but I can't understand Apple's logic in this move. Definitely filing a bug report on this.

EDIT: I found a solution. You have to do a Get Info on the drive for Sharing to see the changes. However, why even offer a drop-down menu in Sharing if you can't make changes to it? You're the damn owner! If a dialog grays out menu items, it should at least offer some explanation as to why. It's apparent that the Sharing dialog mirrors the permissions of the drive, but the Sharing dialog should either offer the user the ability to change permissions there, or explain why it can't.

Yeah, neither was mine. Changing that was one of the first things I did.

It seems to only be grayed out for external drives. *shrug* At least, here anyway. If I add the root directory of an external driver, it's grayed. Folder *on* the drive aren't, though.

Third that. Mine wasn't greyed out either. I wonder what could be causing that. Was anyone logged into your machine at the time S7arman?

Nope. It's an external drive, though. It was cleanly formatted the other day, no changes to its permissions.

I don't know. This is my first time doing it this way.

See, before I had full permissions on the drive on my Mac SERVER, but the Appletalk prefs took precedence. That's what I expected here.

Now I'm doing it from my regular Mac. I would have expected the same rules as the server.

I think there are serious permission issues with Leopard. Especially with servers and disk utility.
