Any good opengl screen saves out there?

All I see are crappy 2d quartz powered ones. Wouldn't mind seeing some nice 3d stuff

Also, can I play a QT movie as a screensaver?

yes, i personally like "igs twisted" and "flurry" but there are others

yes, look for a screen saver called "save hollywood"

i've had a look at the screensaver apis, that's really a piece of cake; once the semester is over, i have a great idea for a screensaver; might take a few weeks, though.

I believe most of the 2d screensavers are actually done in opengl. Quartz isn't really fast enough.

in most cases it's not a question of quartz not being fast enough, it's just that the opengl code already exists and is highly portable...

Heh. Thanks for the mention, but it should probably be pointed out that I haven't yet reworked the code to work in 10.1. Yah, I know it's time to get with the program but between school, work, and other programming projects I haven't had time to go back to it. Hopefully I will get around to it eventually.

Wow, I don't know how I missed that one! This is REALLY cool if you move the frequency slider all the way to the left so that it is one continuous explosion!

I love the U.S., but we need some time apart.

just want to put a vote in for Technicron. An ingenious combination of images of the earth from space at day and night to show you where the sun don't and does shine. And just plain purdy to boot.

They have to be entirely rewritten before it can run on OS X. Unix, BSD, etc screensavers can be ported to OS X in very little time

I really wish that those After Darks module for OS X was written in English and for sure I'll buy it but it's fully japanese

if anyone's interested... here's my first attempt to do a screen saver with opengl.

please bear with me; it's the first time *ever* i did anything with opengl, so i guess it leaves a lot of space for improvements, seems to work though

I remember there was a really really cool 3D fighter airplane screensaver for MacOS 9. Do any of you know if it is ported to OS X?

I ported one screensaver from Quartz to OpenGL, and the frame rate improved by a factor of ten. Nothing complicated was going on, and there was nothing wrong with the Quartz code -- but OpenGL is way faster.

Sharky K, I think you're looking for Setting Sun, it's at versiontracker here:
http://www.versiontracker.com/morein...id=3968&db=mac

I pretty sure it has one saver of a chrome fighter plane 3d model bouncing around the screen. It's still for OS 9 though, it doesn't look like there is an OS X version of it.

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

What I would like to see is a version of Apple's Slide Show screensaver that randomizes the pictures.

DiaporamaX comes close, but its randomization algorithm is crappy at best, and it doesn't do the cool OpenGL transition.

If anyone's looking for a good weekend project, there ya go!

That's GREAT!!! It's superslow and bad quality with my HUGE pix, but when I reduced them to 400x400dpi it's really fast and sharp. The readme should include the ideal size for the pix (I just made a guess). Other than that I love it! You've got to release it on VT!

I love the U.S., but we need some time apart.
