Ok, so I'm gonna need to connect a brand new iMac to a first revision G4 Cube. As far as I know, neither of these two have auto-sensing network cards (do they?). They will both be running OSX.1

What will be the best way to do this?

I have a cheapo $30 ethernet hub, and I can splice a crossover cable if I need to.

Has anyone done this? What's the easiest way?

Gracias!

There are many ways to do this depending on your needs.
If you're simply doing a file transfer and don't need to be using the two computers simultaneously, the best way is to connect the two with a firewire cable, turn one off and restart it while holding down the "T" on the keyboard. Instead of booting, it will mount its hard disks on the other computer and you'll have firewire speed connectivity.

If you need them linked as a network, and you're already using the ethernet port on one for high speed internet, your choices are your hub or AirPort. The apple help system has excellent step by step directions for creating a small LAN using the hub, and doing it with airport is as simple plugging in airport cards and setting the control panel for one to be a base station.

Good luck

Just use the hub - each computer into one of its ports; set up File Sharing (do you know how?), and your'e right... don't worry 'bout a crossover cable if you have a hub, there isn't any point.

This should be easy to do with 10.1. You've got all those great ways to make them communicate: SAMBA, appletalk/ip, nfs... you'll obviously have to set static IPs for the network adapters on the computers, so that you can feed the IPs into the field for connecting to server.

Eh, well, if you're worried about the software side, just use AppleTalk. Its easier... and for us lazy bastards, that means a lot... turn on AppleTalk in OSX and you're right...
