I've set out to create a bunch of replacement icons for VLC because the current icon doesn't quite wet my pants. So in the tradition of MacNN, I hereby post a teaser

Opinions welcome!

you BETTER submit that icon to the developers so they can use it. the current one blows big time.

Killer icons dude! You should totally give them to the VCL guys so that they can use these as the default icons.
Thanks!

Yes, that was my reaction, too. In fact, you might want to change your sig, Fireside. I keep thinking you're Link.

Icons look nice, by the way.

it's just too bad that VLC (the latest) can't handle some WMV's - like the ones from Fredryk Phox

I've read a lot of posts from you thinking they were from Link.

Seriously, a signature change might be in order unless you are fine with such an association.

VLC team already knows about the icons

Actually we really like them. The single gripe is that so far ALL non OSX users I have shown this, say: Why is it so similar to the Mplayer icon?

Also, i'm considering what to do with the file-icons, and the extension that we include on them.
I'm thinking about whether this is desirable. Since you won't know what kind of video is in a AVI, how useful is it to say that it's an avi, when this is already in the extension of the file.

Also remember the huge amount of extensions VLC supports (around 35). There is a maintainability issue as well here. Anyone any suggestions on that subject?

Remember that it's possible to hide extension from file names. I would like to perhaps see a difference in color for different file formats, although that would not work so well with the current black file icon..

The glow color could be changed, although that would probably be practically invisible.

As for the play symbol, what do you people think about this?

The star looks nice, but would people really associate it with movies? How about a glowing camera, with the film reels above it sort of thing.

Also, is just me that think the icon looks a bit small in the Dock compared to other icons?

It looks very nice. You could always do a silhouette of that cone to appease the VLC authors

A film reel and a blue glow in ht center (ala Bombia's Dark Days set) would be shank.

Thank you very, very, very, very, very, very, very much!

Now I don't have to feel ashamed to have VLC in my Dock... that's one of the biggest reasons why I hated using it. Thanks again.

By the way, those rumors are pretty neat, but is 10.4 really that close? It seems like Panther JUST came out... you know? Man, I'm getting old or something.
