I have a 900mhz G3 iBook 14" and I am trying to upgrade to OS 10.4.5 - right now there is only 10.2.8 and I have install discs for a iBook G4. OS X boots and runs, but then I get the error message that it cannot be installed on the machine. WHY?
I have checked the system requirements and the iBook meets all of them.
ANY IDEAS?
Help out a n00b!

I guess you have firstly tried to upgrade with a genuine 10.4 discs… and later running the 10.4.5 Combo updater. Sorry if this input lacks any sense, that is, you have done the right steps yet.
What I am trying to tell, is that you can not download the latest update available 10.4.5 nowadays and apply it over your 10.2.8 Mac OS X version, firstly you have to install the whole 10.4 system, and for doing it you need the retail Mac OS X 10.4 DVD disc.

Clarification of what I think angel is saying: A system disc that came bundled with a computer cannot necessarily install the OS on any other computer. You need the retail disc for that.

I understand that you can't just upgrade from 10.2.8 to 10.4.5 - I am borrowing two copies of OSX, one from a friend who just bought a Powerbook and the other who has a G4 iBook. The powerbook DVDs give me some rediculous screen that tells me the drivers couldnt be found, and the iBook DVDs actually get me to the install screen, just for the little notification to pop up and say, "It cannot be installed." or whatever.
Another friend of mine has the retail disc. I hope that works!
Thanks for the replies!

"Borrowing" a friend's copy of OS X and installing it on your Mac is a no-no.
Suck it up and buy your own copy.

In that case, looks like this isn't the place for me, then. My apologies.

You could at least buy the educational copy online.
I'm assuming you're a student or homeless since $70 isn't that much money to run your computer. Three lawns mowed, one weekend of lots of chores, etc. And then you'll own it so that in case you ever need to reinstall, you won't have to bug your friend again.
