Check out the poster revealed at Comic Con this past week. It shows the insignia from the original series time line, which more or less means Trek XI will be based in that era.
JJ. Abrams is directing, and it is rumored that Matt Damon will be cast as young James Kirk (he is listed for the role on imdb) as well as Gary Sinise as McCoy.
Sounds interesting yet part of me cringes a little at the thought of another prequel. I'd much rather see a dark, gritty version of Trek emerge, possibly as a TV series. TNG's timeline is so f*cked up with all the time travel, an alternate dimension Trek could pan out nicely.
We'll see.

There's a simple way to resolve the "timeline" issues: pretend that the entire Enterprise series was just a bad dream, and never really happened!

Sinese as McCoy. Hmm.. That's not a bad casting choice.

Funny you should bring it up, I just ran into it yesterday while shopping for posters.
Edit: I do like Sinise as McCoy. Anyone care to start throwing out suggestions for other cast members?
(And please God, no Beyoncé as Uhura).

Will Farrell as Kirk?
Janet Jackson as Uhura?
Steve Martin as Commodore Decker.
Harold Ramis as Spock?
Anna Nicole Smith as Yeoman Rand?
Marina Sirtis as Nurse Chappel?

If Matt Damon is Kirk, doesn't that automatically mean Ben Affleck is Spock?

Hints at? They flat out said months ago that it would be about young Kirk and Spock.

Interesting, but not necessarily TOS. There have long been rumors of a movie or series chronicling the very beginnings of the Federation, somewhere between Enterprise and TOS. The older uniform style may date back to that time.

If that were true, then apparently they're pretending the Cage unis didn't happen.

Wicked, then they could go back in time and bring him to the future so he never dies at all.

1) It would a hoot watching Matt Damon emulating Kirk.
2) I will only be happy if they use the original Klingons.

Awww, c'mon! Not Matt Damon!
Everyone knows that young Kirk should be played by Ryan Reynolds.

Maybe not. He's done some incredible serious work. He was Ang Lee's second choice if Ledger turned down the role in BBM (or so I heard from one of the people I know in that biz).
Edit: Damn, Heath Ledger wouldn't be a bad choice as Kirk either.

I wouldn't mind either, though I think Matt Damon's build is more similar to William Shatner's.

Hmm... the only 'serious' work I've seen him advertised for is horror films...
What's BBM?

I love Trek massivley....but another prequel is another nail in the trek coffin. They have to find a story that appeals to the current audiences....not Trekkies and Trekkers alone.
Boldy go where they haven't gone before.... Kirk and Spock have been done over and over and over!

Exactly. BSG is a modern Sci-Fi show. Star Trek is too touchy feely.

Absolutely. I am just not looking forward to it. Which is scary because until BSG came along I was the biggest Star Trek fan on the planet.

Third biggest.

Well i am sure we are head to head. I have a pretty big collection, even some props from the show which I stored somewhere, I should put them out.
Anywho, like I said, Enterprise turned me off like no tomorrow in season 1 & 2 and for the first time in my life I actually skipped some episodes. Season 3 & 4 were damn good but still nothing even close to BSG in any level.

I stopped watching DS9 after "Move Along Home". By then there was already a decline in the show and I just didn't want to waste my time anymore.
For the NY area, Star Trek was on every day, Monday to Monday, at 6pm. It was like a religion around here. I remember watching it on NBC when it was first run, but I was real little then.

Rightly so, that was a HORRIBLE episode, most of season 1 also stunk.
You should go back for sure though, at the end of season 1 it got better and by season 3 it was killer. If you like BSG than DS9 is the best trek.

I'm slightly young for Intelllivision. That and my parents didn't much approve of video games early on.

I think DS9 arrived when the Odyssey met its fate.

That's fair. End of season 2 correct?
The thing I liked about the season 1 finale is that they set up the politics of Bajor and the terror bombings and such reflect well on today.

That's my initial guess as well. It's that or the end of Season 3. I don't care enough to look it up at this point.

Pretty sure season 3 is when the defiant came aboard (because the Odyssey got nuked) so it must have been season 2.
