So, I've had this happen for awhile, but keeping thinking its something I did, but today I'm convinced otherwise.

Basically, I close the lid of my MBP and put it away in its sleeve and go whenever I'm done doing some quick work on it. More often than not, I'll pull it out of its sleeve, its burning up, and its shut down. Today, I pulled it out, and the laptop was still actually on (sleep light wasn't in its snoozing mode, and the apple was glowing meaning the display was on.

What's going on? Has anyone experienced this? What I've noticed is that if I actually go to apple -> sleep its fine. But if I do like I want, and shut the lid and go.... it doesn't always put itself to sleep.

Reset the PMU and PRAM.

PMU: Turn it off, unplug it, take out the battery, and hold the power button for 5-6 seconds.

PRAM: Put the battery back in, plug the adapter back in, turn it on, and when the screen powers up, press and hold Command+Option+P+R. The computer should reset again, you'll hear the chime once more. You can release the keys.

I'll give that a try tonight, once I have some down time.

what exactly is causing this to happen though?

I read that 10.4.8 caused this issue. It started happening to me a few weeks ago. I had slid my macbook pro under my bed one night lid closed and thought it was asleep only to hear the mail ding. That is when I realized it wasn't sleeping. I shut it down and searched the issue. I reset the PMU only to repeat it less than five days later. Now I truly watch for the 'breathing" light to make sure it is asleep before stuffing in the bag.
