Published reports say Apple has ditched its popular “Mac Guy” actor Justin Long for future “Get a Mac” commercials.
According to Radar more commercials featuring John Hodgman as the “I’m a PC” character are being produced. One of Long’s representatives told Radar: “Justin’s a movie star, not a commercial guy.” Long has appeared in Dodgeball and Herbie: Fully-Loaded. No word on what his next project will be although rumor has it he’ll be playing a hacker in a Bruce Willis flick called Live Free or Die Hard.
The “Get a Mac” guy follows in a long tradition of popular spokespeople cut off in their prime. Dell killed the Dell Dude in 2002 and Sprint spiked its deadpan trench coat-wearing guy in 2005 (after appearing in 155 commercials). If you were the “Can you hear me now” guy you better watch your back.
Macworld: News: 'I'm a Mac' and I'm unemployed
Other than the fact that Justin has no idea what a computer is (per Tonight Show interview with Jay Leno), I didn't have a problem with him. He did a great job in the commercials.

I thought he was funny in those commercials, as well as in Dodgeball and Accepted. Was it Apple that canned him, or did he just up and quit? Sometimes these little things are lost in translation in the news.

He was funny in the 'Mac and PC' commercials, but he was really only funny to Mac users and thus served no purpose in a set of commercials trying to convince PC users to purchase a Mac.

My friends thought he was funny, and they don't have Macs. In fact, one of them worte a little one-pager for school (communications major) about how entertainging he thought those commercials were. I think he was making a point about making commercials about tech both easy to understand, and also actually about the technology.

I had read that Justin Long didn't want to be stuck as a commercial actor, but wanted to continue to be a "movie star."
Either way, props to the "I'm a Mac, and I'm unemployed" line.

I am glad he's gone, and I kept this grudge within me since those ads started. On the other hand, I disliked the scripting and message of those commercials, as much as I disliked Justin Long. Too snooty.

He's an OK actor, but his voice is like a male Fran Drescher.
It was funny in Galaxy Quest cuz he played a nerd.

He was also the über-dork in the short-lived NBC series "Ed".

I never liked him as the "cool Mac guy". He was funny in DodgeBall though getting pegged with the ball in the nuts!

I liked the one where he spoke to the 'Japanese Camera.' Just randomly silly. From my point of view.

You blew your first MacNN post on that?
Anyways...I was indifferent to Justin Long. Hodgman, on the other hand, is superb.

I thought Justin did a wonderful job. It just went against the grain when he anounced on the Tonight Show that he didn't use computers that much, and didn't know anything about them.

Yeah, I read the same thing. He was scheduled for a shoot the next morning. Maybe it came from some internet magazine that didn't like him.
