Apple flies 'Jolly Roger' outside headquarters for 40th anniversary
A pirate flag is being flown outside Apple's Infinite Loop headquarters, as part of a number of events celebrating the anniversary of the company's founding 40 years ago today. Flying alongside other flags, the "Jolly Roger" banner, complete with a multicolored Apple logo covering one eye, refers to a time early on in the company's history when a team was developing what would become one of Apple's most important product launches.
The flag, spotted in imagesposted on Twitter by9to5Mac, is a symbol of the original Mac. The Macintosh development team hung the flag around its offices, in order to differentiate itself and its work from that of the rest of Apple, which was instead working on the Lisa.
Susan Kare, the graphic designer behind the icons used by the first Mac, is credited with painting the original flag, with folklore suggesting it was stolen by the Lisa team and held for ransom, before being returned to the Mac team. A number of years after the flag went missing, Kare recreated the flag for the company.
Another celebratory item offered by Apple for the anniversary is a video, one it aired during the recent "Let us loop you in" event. Titled 40 Years in 40 Seconds, the video slideshow switches quickly between the names of Apple products and notable references throughout its existence.

It would have to be. At this point, the entire Apple II family is well less than half of the company's timeline, and probably not even 2% of the company's all time earnings.
That said, I loved me my Apple II. No e, c, +, or gs, thanks.
