I'm beginning to be interested in making a few small productions, I was wondering if anyone had any advice about DV Camcorder purchasing, I have a budget of about $500-600 and I'm rather confused. For example, I was looking at the ZR80 and it's selling for $400 right now on Amazon:

But at the same time, the ZR70 is selling for $40 more:

The ZR70 is a year older but has a higher optical zoom. So yes..I'm rather confused on what to purchase, if anyone else has any other suggestions, I'm all ears. Thanks.

The ZR70 looks like an American version of the MV650i (going off specs and the look of the thing). I have the MV630i (i.e. a little below it), and I'm very pleased with it. It works great with imovie and final cut pro, and to my untrained eye the image quality looks great - it was much better than I expected, anyway! My expectations had been coloured by poor quality analogue camcorders in the past, I think.

It cost me 350 (i.e. about $700, given current exchange rates). At the price I see on Amazon, I'd snap it up if I were you!

What the nerd community most often fail to realize is that all features aren't equal. A well implemented and well integrated feature in a convenient interface is worth way more than the same feature implemented crappy, or accessed through a annoying interface.

When Canon refreshes its consumer line, it naming scheme begins where the previous left off. Last year's series was ZR-60-65-70 (low to high feature set); this year it's 80-85-90 (two years ago it was 40-45-50 and three years ago it was 20-25-30); however, the ZR-90 doesn't seem to equal last year's ZR-70--primarily because the 70 has a hot shoe that you can use a nice, low-wattage light and shotgun mic it you wish link.

I shot a friend's wedding with a ZR-70 last year, and I really liked it and think it's worth the $40 premium over the ZR80.

Any thoughts on the Panasonic GS70 or the Canon Optura 20?

The GS70 and Optura 20 are hardly "budget" DV camcorders. Nevertheless, here are some reviews:

I'd get the GS70 because it has 3 CCDs...

I've got the ZR60 and love it. I didn't need the hot shoe, colored buttons, extra zoom, crappy built-in camera, etc. If you can still find one, I recommend it. Or, get the ZR80, or whatever the upgraded ZR60 is called.

Note that I just do family stuff, nothing fancy, nothing professional. The ZR60 does have some motor noise using the built in mic and may not have all the features a pro would need.

Check out dvspot for reviews.

One caveat regarding the ZR-70 that I remember--the lighted buttons CAN'T be turned off. Pain in the a$$.
