This problem has persisted year or so but I haven't been around to it since my dad purchased his new Powerbook. The laptop in question is a Powerbook G4/550 running 10.2 that, when logging in, will load and appear to getting to the desktop but then will loop back to the login screen once again. I have already tried:
1. Resetting PRAM
2. Safe Boot
Furthermore, the computer will not boot up on any of the Mac OS CDs that I own (Mac OS 9, OS 10.0, and the 10.1 CD that came with the Powerbook.) Help?

I've had this too with the login popping up twice. I didn't have it on my iBook with 10.3. I'm not sure if I experienced it with my 12" in 10.3 before upgrading to 10.4. I was thinking it was caused by importing my old data from the iBook to my clean 10.4 install.
I tried trashing a lot of preferences (or plists), but the problem persists. I'm not sure if it even helped temporarily.
I thought the last update was going to fix it as it mentioned something that sounded almost like the problem we're seeing.

Oh well. I believe though, that if you wat a little while before signing in, sometimes you only have to do it once.

I just turned off my auto start and sleep settings in "Energy Saver." My Powerbook had been locking up while in sleep, and knowing that this caused some problems with my iBook (the autosleep setting, I think) in the beginning, I thought I'd give that a try.
Since I've removed those settings, I've not had to login twice. I just hope it'll stay this way.

Now that I've thought about it (and again, it hasn't happened again yet) it might be a Power Manager issue… Perhaps a PMU reset might fix it.
