Changing the desktop font face/style is one of those things OS X users have been trying to figure out how to change for 2 years. So far I don't think anyone has figured out how to change the horribly ugly style of desktop fonts. I thought I heard that an unreleased version of Silk by unsanity could change the font itself of the finder font, but I've never seen this myself.

Yes, the upcoming 2.0 release of Silk from Unsanity will remedy this problem for sure...

The bold white w/ shadow has been annoying me since the PB... Can't wait to change it. Any idea when Silk 2 will be released?

Not a clue, I thought it was supposed to be a long time ago since they released a beta to a few people awhile back, but nothing has come of it in recent time...haven't heard a word.

Sorry.

I also hate the bold shadowed Lucida Grande for the desktop icons.
I really hope Panther brings more customization options for this.

Silk is still in private beta, but it can indeed change this, as well as many other things. I think.

The author cruises these boards sometimes, maybe he can answer this more authoritatively.

Silk will definitely change the type font, but I don't think it can keep it from being white with shadows. I hate that too. I think I like it a little better than the way OS9 did the desktop labels though with the translucent white boxes under the black type.

I love the U.S., but we need some time apart.

It is possible to make desktop icon names black with no shadow; I think the setup is as follows:
Code:
defaults write com.apple.Finder hasDarkDesktop 0
(yes, you set it to 0; the default is 1)

...however, this does not add OS9-like white boxes around the text. It's just plain black text without a background.
