Cougar is the only one that doesn't sound odd for an operating system... even "Lion" has an odd ring to it.
Though Smilodon would be pretty kickass...

Apple probably should start choosing non-cat names or they'll risk not having an interesting name to call it in the future. IMO they have already used up the interesting cat names. It might be better to not have a name but I guess that would make it rather impersonal. I've always referred to the OS as the number such as 10.3 or 10.4 rather than the name...or is that just me? Do you guys actually use the animal name when you talk about different apple OS versions?

I think they're going to loop back around and call it Cheetah. Nobody knew what the cat names were back then anyway.

Puma (yes, another name for Cougar but has a better ring to it) would sound good and are the only big cat common to North America, which would kind of make sense. I can practically see the iPod/running gear crossover promotions already. Official Puma runner's mix albums from iTunes, anyone?

See what I mean? Just recycle Cheetah and Puma so you can get the full marketing value out of them.

Itchy in honor to Scratchy...
The one that has the rights on this character could then be invited to the Keynote and spend 10 minutes talking about the new codename. Maybe Krusty will make it to the Keynote too... Scratchy would be on a Win Vista machine in the middle of Golden Gate's bridge.

The poll is flawed. OS X has been using the names of ābig catsā; lynxes and ocelots are a step down the ladder. āFelineā doesn't make any sense, at all.
Wikipedia:
[test]Big cat distinguishes the large wild cats from much smaller species. One definition of big cat includes only the four species of cat in the genus Panthera: the lion, tiger, leopard, and jaguar. Members of this genus are the only cats able to roar, and this is sometimes considered a distinguishing characteristic of big cats. A more expansive definition also includes the cheetah, snow leopard, clouded leopard[dubious ā see talk page], and cougar. The roaring cats may also be distinguished from the other big cats by referring to them as "great cats".[/test]
10.0 (Cheetah)
10.1 (Puma)
10.2 (Jaguar)
10.3 (Panther)
10.4 (Tiger)
10.5 (Leopard)
Let's face it, there aren't that many big cat names left. In fact, āLionā is about the only thing left that makes sense, even though it has the distinct disadvantage of being too cuddly, thanks to āThe Lion KIngā, āLippy the Lionā and all sorts of other anthropomorphic characters. āCougarā would not be a good idea, either, as they've already used āPumaā.
Personally, I think they should abandon the big cat naming custom entirely, and switch over to venomous spiders.
10.6 (Atrax)
10.7 (Fiddleāback)
10.8 (Tarantula)
10.9 (Black Widow)
After that, they could move on to Lovecraft mythology:
11.0 (Cthulhu)
11.1 (Dagon)
11.2 (Shub-Niggurath)
11.3 (Mordiggian)
11.4 (Yig)
11.5 (Hastur)
11.6 (Nodens)
11.7 (Yog-Sothoth)
11.8 (Nyarlathotep)
11.9 (Azathoth)
Nothing cute about any of those, shows Apple means business.

The list is missing a few:
Jaguarundi, Margay, Serval and Caracal. There are others too but they all have names like Southeast Asian Fishing Cat which is just too long.
Puma, Cougar, Panther, and Mountain Lion are the same thing. Puma's been done so the other 3 should be out.
Technically a Snow Leopard is a different cat than a Leopard, but who cares?
Just for the record there are several big cats in North America besides Cougars: Lynx, Bobcats and even Jaguars and the occasional Jaguarundi.
Sure, a Bobcat may not be as huge as a Siberian Tiger but they do take down deer and sheep so it's not exactly a house cat either. Kind of a lame name though.
I say we switch to stripper names: Diamond, Cheyenne, Candy, Destiny, Raven, Jade, etc.
conveys good looks, user friendly, full of engineered add-ons.
So Mac OS 10.7 Brianna

Now, seriously...
How about just 10.6 (for general relief)?
They will be running out of dangerous animals soon, and then... ?
Usually, any marketing move (and calling an OS after animals is one) runs out of freshness in a very short time, and it wouldn't fit a company like Apple, who is proud of being creative, to continue this zoo naming much longer.
I guess Leopard will be the last cat of the collection.

True. But it's not used in the sense of being a system version number but rather a brand name. Even though Apple had to make it confusing and use versioning beginning with 10.0. Should have been Mac OS X, 1.0. One of the many mysteries of the universe.

I heard it was to prevent previous system versions from lapsing into the public domain.

Mac OS Garfield?
Lion ought to be 10.9. Lynx is probably the best of the rest, except it's already the name of a text-only browser. Tomcat could work, if they could get Cruise to advertise it in a new version of the Get a Mac ads...
