7 Stores in California,
2 Stores in ARIZONA,
2 Stores in NEW JERSEY,
1 Store in WISCONSIN
3 Stores in New York,
et al.

Unbelievable! Beam Me Up!

Instead of trying to get an Apple Store in as many states as possible, instead Apple is following an arbitrary marketing formula of disparity as there are still no plans for a Philadelphia Apple Store.

It's really hard for non-Philadelphians or non-Pennsylvanians to understand this, but after these several rounds of deploying stores, having Philadelphia or Pittsburgh not even come up as a location is giving Pennsylvanians a black eye, as if we're blacklisted.

I'm not saying that we need a store just because I live here, but I'd like to list some facts:

1. The Philadelphia area is home to many of the nation's top universities, all of which adopted Macs and even some were ambassador schools to Apple during the days of Jobs/Sculley. In fact, Jobs paid several visits to Philly in the early 80's to promote the new Macs.

2. The Philadelphia area has one of the largest shopping malls on the east coast (King of Prussia Mall). It's a very large and high-scale mall and fits in perfectly with the types of upper-class venues that Apple is looking for.

What I'm saying is that there is trully no better place for an Apple store than in the Philly area. Apple, why have you forgotten Philadelphia--the city that embraced you in your infancy?

We'll be waiting...

I agree. They should focus on other "major minor" city's and big university locations next (excluding area's already covered by current apple stores) they need to get the message out to as many people as possible, focusing on only a handful of major areas can not reach all possible customers.

[edit]hell I'm still amazed that Palo Alto was not among the first stores. Hopefully in the next year's deployment your area too will have one (and Sac too! )

Although I'm thrilled to have both the Chandler and Biltmore Apple Store locations in the Phoenix market, it is interesting to see some of the major cities that have been overlooked to date.

Is there anyone "in the know" on these boards who might shed some light on Apple's strategy for why stores go where?

Yes, there should be an Apple Store in Philadelphia, which is the only bright spot in Pennsylvania, surrounded by a sea of ignorant German Dutch descended hicks who infest Pennsylvania's center all the way to Pittsburg.

Who wants to market to them? They all think macs are for communists and gays.

You're pretty on-target about Pennsylvania, but the infestation doesn't end at the Allegheny County line. Pittsburgh... That's Pittsburgh with an "h," is pretty bad, too. But is Minnesota any better?

This is getting so old. Everyone in every city that doesn't have an Apple store yet -- the key word being YET -- loves to scream and bitch about not having one, as if it means all the Apple stores in place today are the only Apple stores there will ever be.

King of Prussia Mall is in line for an Apple store. (Am I the ONLY person that follows all the rumor sites?) Philadelphia is a top ten market and there is no way Apple is going to overlook it. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if Philly ended up with two or three stores. I really wish people would just calm down already.

The nearest Apple store to me is 50 miles away, even though I'm in NJ. Most of NJ isn't exactly around the corner from the NJ store. But I'm not crying about it, because I know we're all witnessing the growth and expansion of a new retail store chain. If there isn't a location convenient to us right now, we need only wait a bit -- there will probably be one soon, as long as we live in a metra area that's in the top 50 - 70 markets. (I'm approximating.)

My personal beef is with Apple moronically putting stores close to each other in metro areas, and leaving huge swaths untouched. The LA area for instance -- Northridge, Glendale, Pasadena, and Farmer's Market are all rather close to one another, as are South Coast Plaza and Newport Beach. And Tyson's Corner and Clarendon, in the DC area -- less than 10 miles apart, I believe -- while the District itself and Maryland suburbs have to learn to "do without," or learn to enjoy commuting.

And I like Philly a lot, by the way. Certainly a hell of a lot more than that OTHER metro area that borders NJ, which I unfortunately live near. It won't be long before you guys are enjoying your own Apple store(s), and soon after, you'll be laughing and ignoring those "why doesn't my city have an Apple store?" threads on MacNN.

Being a Northern NJ transplant to Harrisburg, I guess I'm used to the lack of tehcnology in PA and the frustrating things that happen....

When I bought my iMac I had to travel 2.5 hours to DC (Clarendon) as they were the only ones who had it. Left at 6pm that evening and was home by 10 (truly a quick trip).

When I bought my digital camera, Best Buy was the only option other than mail order. Unfortunately, BB had the financing I needed. So, 1hour to Reading.

Want a CompScrewSA? That's 1hr to Baltimore or 1.5 to Philly.

The only good thing is it's usually a nice trip for the wife and I - our first visit to the Apple store was a nice Sunday trip - Apple Store, Shopping, and Dinner. Reading was a dinner trip after work, etc...

However, I agree, Philly should have an Apple store - the KOP CompU$A truly SUCKS! I was in there in late Feb. and they had no iMacs and they were still trying to sell a CUBE!!! Supposedly, the KOP mall is getting an Apple store.

I still travel back to NNJ about once a month, so it's no big deal - I can hit Tice's Corner, Pallisades, and now Short Hills within 30-45 mins. Although I'll never understand why Tice and Pallisades exist - except for the BS about Bergen County not allowing stores to be open on Sunday....(Pallisades is not exactly an 'upscale' mall, either!)

mbryda,
Yeah, I clocked the trip from Tice's Corener's exit off the Parkway to the parking lot of Palisades. 8 miles. Why in the world do you put up two stores in THIS area only 8 miles from each other?

But I must remain skeptical about it and I'll believe it when I see it.

Regardless of the fact, I'm still very bitter at the fact that after this 2nd or 3rd wave of store deployments, that this area still gets nothing.

The only legitmate answer I could possibly think of as to the reasons of not penetrating the Philadelphia market is due to Mac vendors in the area such as Springboard Media, Bundy Computer, and Micro Center specifically requesting Apple to "stay out." Who knows, it's just a theory I had last night before going to bed.

The only other good location for an Apple store in the Philla. area would be...Delaware. It would be a short drive from Philla. and have no sales tax!!!! That would be good - prices of mail order (since they don't discount Apple stuff), the immediacy of retail!

Anyway, I'm still puzzled why no Philly store - the population is definitely there to support it.

From South Jersey here. They really REALLY need to put a store around here. The closest is a 3 hour drive. I was really excited when they were building a store in Short Hills. I didn't realize at the time that there were two Short Hills in New Jersey, one near me and one in Northern Jersey.

Yes, King of Prussia is a definite. Great location and good upper and middle class market.

Now Philly has two Apple resellers. Springboard Media (good store with good range of accessories and software...like the place, even though they dropped me for an interview for a sales position ) and Bundy Typewriter & Computer Co , where I bought my iMac. When the iMac HD died on me one month later, I sent it back and within 48 hours it was ready for pick up...works great since).

I really don't know where Apple would have a store in Center City. Could work at the Liberty One Mall...more upscale than the pitiful Gallery on Market...ugh, that Mall is sad...more for the KMart crowd.

Still, an Apple store here in Center City would hurt those resellers...so let them build one in KofP instead.

Oh yeah, PHILLY ROCKS. PITTSBURGH SUX.

Well after Apple successfully launches it's 200 or so planned stores for the US, they better start opening up some in Australia. The current situation here is in much need of improvement, and I know many people that want Macs but don't have access to any stores. There is some very easy market to made in Australia. Apple could get to 10% very easily here if they at least tried.
In vino veritas.

Holy moly - I used to live above the Last Drip Coffee Shop on the top floor until I moved to King of Prussia - traffic and commute was killer. I miss Philly, but not the traffic.

Waiting for an Apple Store out here ... The CompUSA is HORRIBLE ...

Sheesh, small world on these boards...

Someone needs to send me a cheesesteak from Gino's or Pat's, I moved to Massachusetts nearly 8 months ago, and I'm DYING for a good cheesesteak. Up here, a cheesesteak is some f**ckin' minute steak and kraft singles.

I'm in harrisburg as well and I made a trip to Tice's Corner once to get the 10.1 cd. I would love a store just a little closer than that. I don't want to drive down to again to get my 10.2 cd.

I have been to the Tysons Corner Apple Store in McLean Virginia and thats about 2 hours and 45 minuts away! I am not asking Apple to place a store in State College PA where I live because that wouldnt be a wise business decision. I really wish they would put one in the King Of Prussia mall whihc is the ideal Apple Store location.

A note to the bastard who said that Pennsylvania is hick dutch all the way from Philly to Pitt : You are a misguided and ignorant retard. Central PA may have some people like that but I know because I have lived in State College for 16 years that this place is far from "hick." It is not at all a city atmosphere but it is not a "backwoods" place either. Penn State University is a major research university and is recognized world wide as such (we also have pretty good football). There are over 42,000 students at the University Park main campus located in State College. I am starting to think that Apple should open dowsized Apple Stores on campuses ot near them because of the ridiculous population density in this particular area. There are many more college campuses in which Apple could na dshould do this. I think they should deploy campus stores with knowledgable, trained staff on college campuses that number 35,000 or more in enrollment.

Chairman Jobs, the people have spoken!

KING OF PRUSSIA

And by the way, perhaps you should ask your friend and board member Micky Drexler (Gap) as to why KoP has been overlooked so far. He should know KoP well, he has several Gap stores in there!

It was interesting the day I got my iMac....Got a phone call that we had the final approval for our home Equity Loan (short term payment for the iMac + pay off credit cards, etc.)... Call 2 local Apple resellers...
#1 Mac's N PC's - Nobody answered (4pm)
#2 Sunrise Computers in Chambersburg - they were still filling iMac orders from Tax Free PC Week (this was the end of March)!!!!!!!

Called 2 Apple Stores:
#1 Tyson's Corner (I knew how to get there - I was just there 2 weeks prior) - None
#2 Clarendon - They had 1 SuperDrive Left. Asked them to hold it - they said they could only do it until close. I said OK, what time do you close... 9PM. No problem - it's only 5pm.

Called the wife on her cell - couldn't get her so left a message for her that she was on her own for dinner and that I was going to VA to pick up the computer. Got a call from her about a half hour later "I don't believe you are driving to VA tonight to get your computer....".

3 hours later (MAPQUEST DIRECTIONS SUCKED ROYALLY!) I arrived in Clarendon (Nice mall BTW) and picked up my baby... While paying for it, the salesperson asked if I wanted to register it and I said "sure". After hearing where I was from, he asked, oh, is that close to the border? When I told him it was a 3 hour drive he said "WOW - that's devotion!"

Drove home and got home by 10:30 (once I realized I was 15 minutes from Tyson's Corner, I knew how to get home!), had the best out of box experience imaginable and was on the net by 11:00 (including cleaning the computer desk!)!

Now I'm hooked!

About PA: My job has taken me all throughout most of PA and I can say we are one of the most interesting states in America. Within 5 hours you can go from Major city (Phlly) to Hickville (Perry County! You can go from meeting rich snobs who are the epitome of high class to Mr. 2 toothed farmer who lives in an old school bus! (No kidding - I saw that on a trip up to Warren, a city about an hour east of Erie on the PA/NY border.) State College is an interesting place - a big city in the middle of nowhere!

I do agree that Apple should put stores in all the major college towns - it doesn't have to be a full fledged store, either, just someplace for the college people to go to learn about Apples.

For those of us in Central PA, there is a Mac store in Lancaster - it's called Macheads and is at Macheads Website. They are located just off Rt 30 next to That Pet Place. I've never been there yet, but I do plan on stopping in sometime soon to see what they have. Not sure about Macs N PC's in Camp Hill. Sunrise in Camp Hill is only corporate - you have to drive to Chambersburg (you'd be better off going to Lancaster), and Sunrise isn't the most consumer-friendly place either!

Other than that, Central PA is a technology black hole - no Best Buy, no CompU$A, no real computer places. I guess I luck out in that I'm a PC builder/consultant on the side so I can get stuff through D&H and Ingram, but that gets old and if you aren't sure about something or want to see it before you buy it, you are screwed. It's amazing - we have 2 Circuit $hitties, 2 Tweeters, Costco, Target, 2 Borders, Lord and Taylor, but no Best Buy, no real computer store, etc. Simply amazing!

Enough for now - Hope I helped some people in this area.

I miss PA a bit since I moved up to Massachusetts...

For one thing, PA has Centralia. Do a google search, what a great town!

Kutztown University, home of the angry chicken. If you get drunk enough, and look at the school's clock tower at a precise 45 degree angle, I swear it looks exactly like: an angry chicken...

My grandparents live in the subburbs of Philly, I know both places. State College is by no means small as somebody mentioned it is like a big city in the middel of nowhere.

Want to see my house? No grass yet as we just moved in but tell me I am a hick...
