Well, MWNY is right around the corner. Maybe its not "the big one" this time, but we're sure to see at least a few things. 10.2, a 17'' imac, ipod for pc, and of course, faster power macs. But anyway... whats everyone expecting in 29 days or so?

Another let down?

1. Bigger drived iPod(and maybe with a 2" by 2" screen that will play movies).

2. Small upgrades to the iMacs(maybe 17", but maybe not).

3. Upgrades to Towers(G5's anyone? *wink* *wink*)

4. O' course a couple hours of Steven showing us around 10.2

5. iTunes 3, iMovie 3. Maybe 10.1.6, if we are lucky.

Nothing good, but badly needed.

Here's my semi-conservative prediction:

1. iMac update. No 17" screen; just faster CPUs, and probably a switch in drives:

900Mhz G4
256MB
Geforce 2MX 32MB
SuperDrive

800Mhz G4
256MB
Geforce 2MX 32MB
SuperDrive

800Mhz G4
128MB
Radeon 7500 32MB
Combo

The eMac will fit in with anyone only wanting a CD-RW.

2. Of course the demo of 10.2

3. New PowerMacs. I think the G5 is highly plausible. It's been pretty much a year and a half since Moto announced the 'G5' processor set for embedded markets, and you usually takes about 18 months till the new processor makes it to Apple's lineup. So my fingers are crossed.

4. Possibly a new iDevice. But if that's the case there'll probably be no iMac update. Four things to cover in a SteveNote is way too much.

Actually, I don't know. Steve will probably demo Jaguar for almost an hour. Will announce release date and cost. Then it'll probably be an iMac update and new iDevice. That would take of the consumer market for a while. Then in Paris Steve can release 10.2 and the G5.

The least Apple can get away with!

Upgraded Powermacs: Max 1.3ghz, XServe DDR implementation, same enclosure, firewire2 possibly...nothing special.

Minor upgrades to the iMac line, again nothing special.

Possibly G4 iBook special edition...it seems like a good idea...

iDevice, probably camera...

Black turtle neck and jeans.

Steve to stand behind a bullet-proof glass enclosure throughout...

I expect MWSF 2003 to be the BIG event, with an IBM PPC based Powermac wth RIO, full DDR (IBM Power4 derivative). I get the feeling that the stuff is there in the wings but just not quite ready...

I would also like to point out that every year my predictions are spectacularly wrong so what do I know?!

Peace,

Marc

Even if it's not significant, for some reason at MWNY we always see a refresh in the all the desktop computers. (Last year we got new iMacs and PowerMacs, same year before can't remember the before that).

So I expect to see this:

At least 256 MB RAM standard on all machines, like 128 MB became standard last year
40 GB HDs lowend on 'Books, 60 GB minimum on 'Macs.

iMac G4
1.0/1.2/1.4 GHz G4 Processor *optimistic*
256 MB/256 MB/512 MB SDRAM @ 133 MHz
60 GB/60 GB/80 GB @ 5400 RPM
256 KB L2 Cache w/ 2 MB of L3 Cache
GForce4MX/GForce4MX/GForce4Ti
56 Kbps Modem
Gigabit Ethernet
1280x1024 resolution and optional 17" monitor ($150 more or something)
CD-RW/Combo/SuperDrive
2x FireWire, 2x USB
$1199/$1299/$1499

PowerMac G4 Work Station
1.0/1.2/1.4/1.6 GHz G4 Processor (all dual)
256 MB/512 MB/512 MB/1 GB @ 266 MHz
60 GB/80 GB/100 GB/120 GB @ 10,000 RPM (if not, 7,400 RPM)
256 KB L2 Cache w/ 2 MB of L3 Cache
GeForce 4 Ti/Radeon 8500 (you get to choose)
Optional 56 Kbps Modem (+50)
Gigabit Ethernet
2x FireWire 2x USB
CD-RW/Combo/Super Drive/Super Drive (can custom build with any drive [CD|DVD|CD-R|Combo|Super])
$1499/$2199/$2499/$2999

eMac
1.0 GHz G4 Processor
256 MB SDRAM @ 133 MHz
40/60 GB @ 5400 RPM
256 KB L2 Cache w/ 2 MB of L3 Cache
GForce2MX/GForce4MX
No Modem/56 Kbps Modem
Gigabit Ethernet
17" CRT Monitor
CD-RW (
2x FireWire, 2x USB
$599/$799

iPod:
More funky features, more storage, cheaper
$199/$299

And that's it... BTW, it's all wild speculation and just what I think what's going to happen on the predictable side of things (Steve always wants to show of a new product)
In vino veritas.

why do you people always overestimate G4 mhz speed?

it's going to increase at it's current pace:

Powermac
1.1 Ghz (Dual)

1.1 Ghz (single)

1 Ghz

Or start over with a new processor. If you think about it...

Starting at 1 Ghz plus is a good beginning for the G5? right? it has been 1.5 years since it has been announced by MOt, right?

but i doubt it, we would not like to confuse buyers now with the switch campaign...or do you think steve is pulling it out just for them?

I don't believe that the G5 as per Motorola specs / product code 85xx will ever see a desktop Mac....there have been too many cancelation rumors for my liking

IMHO the next processor family will be made by IBM...it may be called a G5 for marketing purposes, but it won't be one as we know it...Moki and Dorsal (if he exists?!) have added a healthy dose of credibilty to this idea....

As for 1.1 Ghz G4s....I went for 1.3 beacuse it has proved relatively easy to overclock the current 1Gz chips to 1.2 and 1.3....even if Moto haven't sorted the 0.13 process, I believe that 1.3 is a distinct possibilty...

Peace,

Marc

Well Apple even said the G4 has a lot of life left in it so if you just read that how it is, G5's won't be out this summer. I mean, come on, even the iBook stil has a G3 in it...why have 3 variations of the PPC processor for your products? Confusing?

I'm hoping for a system with embeded Bluetooth. It'd be nice to get a set of G4 systems with a minimum speed of 2GHz, too.
Is this a good place for an argument?

Steve will announce the grand opening of the SoHo store and cut the ribbon, which according to today's PowerPage isn't too far fetched!

Quite honestly, anything he says or does would be better than last year's New York letdown. The crowd was so depressed afterwards. "No (sob) new (snif) iMac (hurl)."

Nah, just the 10.1 demonstration. The free mouse was the year before (at the Cube intro).

Coming this year?

cube-dude,
Yup. I've been going every year since MacWorld Boston in '96. I already started a thread about "Who's going to MWNY?".
According to the woman I spoke to last week, badges will be mailed tomorrow.
