I just purchased a LaCie d2 drive with what I was told was either a Pioneer 108 or NEC drive inside. My question was if I later want something faster, can I remove the current drive and pop in another? ie Treat it as a 3 1/2 external drive case. Or can't it be removed, or isn't the drive an actual PC type internal 3 1/2, or the firmware in the box won't work with any other drive? Thanks!

first off, you should post questions about peripherals in the peripherals forum. but to answer your question, yes, it should work as the drive is a standard part and can be replaced with another drive of your choice.

So a Pioneer, and later a 109 and no problems with the casing firmware or compability with the newer drive??? ie Like replacing one internal with another?
Thanks.

Yes, you can replace the internals in these already assembled external cases.

In my experience, however, if you plan to reuse the external case it is better to buy the case and drive separately. Then you are purchasing something designed to be easy to assemble, etc. And it's often cheaper.
