I have an iBook 500MHz Dual USB running 10.3.9. I bought a 512MB memory stick, but when I put it in I got a grey screen and nothing else. When I put the old 128 stick in it is fine. Any clues?

As Peter says, a grey screen certainly can indicate dodgy memory.

Before you return it make sure it is seated correctly. Carefully remove the memory and then re-insert it again, making sure it is pushed in all the way.

Hope this helps.

I got it from a store on ebay. I have looked at the RAM through Open Firmware and it is seeing it alright, I have booted telling the mac to use the first byte of the new ram and it is ok, but when I tell it to use only half the ram for example, I get the failure. Any body got any more ideas?

Um, what are you talking about? "Telling the mac to use the first byte" and "tell it to use only half the ram?" What are you doing in OF or somewhere else to do this? Plus, why would you buy RAM off of Ebay? Bad idea.
