Not sure what foreign language you're taking but I'm taking Latin and have found that iFlash has been invaluable for memorizing vocabulary and forms.

in college and now grad school i didn't use anything fancy (besides, say, mathematica or sibelius for coursework which warranted that):
iCal for managing my schedule
Stickies or notes in TextEdit for keeping track of what i need to do immediately, this week, sometime soon, etc.
Safari for accessing the course websites
boring stuff, really. then again i didn't do too hot in the foreign languages i took: in spanish i'd think unwittingly in japanese, and in japanese i cruised along until the kanji exams...

Spiky Dog! Lol I feel your pain man, with my brain language is like a type writer, new language comes in and old language comes out! I just set up iCal which has worked out perfectly.
Thank You and all the peeps who have responded. I have installed, iCal, iFlash, and Omni G!

we dropped some jaws in class last semester when the teacher wanted us to make [powerpoint] presentations and i hooked up my powerbook with keynote to their projector.
for college, i use iCal and word.

If you're doing research for a class and need to get the gist of a 100 page PDF or Word doc, check out theConcept. Basically it will read the document for you and then give you a breakdown of all the significant keywords found. Behind each keyword is a report of citations containing the keyword from the paper. It's a quick way of digesting huge papers without having to actually, er, read them.

Nice Saddino! This particular application is AWESOME! At first I thought you were describing it as "actually" reading with an Apple robot voice. LOL!

Check any see if your college has a site license for EndNote (otherwise it's pretty damn expensive). If you're writing papers with lots of citations and want to make sure it's all done correctly, EndNote is an invaluable tool. Currently it doesn't work with Word 2004, but they'll be releasing 8 as a free update to 7 soon and that will fix the issues.
Possibly it's coolest feature is it's ability to change the citation format on the fly. Have all your citations and literature cited in the format for American Journal of Botany but need it reformatted for Conservation Biology? A few clicks and you're done!

BibTeX has, as far as I can tell, most of the features of EndNote, but for free. I recommend looking at Bibdesk if you prefer a GUI. I just use TeXShop.

When I was in college, I used OmniOutliner for my class notes. Hands-down the best money I've ever spent on software.

How'd I get it for free?

Yes EndNote is a must if you do any serious writing involving citations. It basically types out the in-text citations and also types a bibliography at the end of your document automatically! Not only does it make typing the citations easy, it also makes it very easy to find them via integrated web searching. If you have a hard copy of an article or paper just search for it via EndNote and you won't have to manually type in all the info from your hard copy.

Yes, indeed. Like I said, BibTeX. It's free.
