Languages evolve—deal with it. There’s a difference between evolvement of a spoken language, which emanates from its native speakers and often leads to multitudes of dialects and forking, and the development of the written language, which to a much greater degree comes as decrees from a governing entity, in order to make it as uniform as possible.

‘Older’ does not necessarily mean ‘more correct’. It simply means ‘older’. I use the, incidentally older, ae/oe forms as well, but only because I find them aesthetically more pleasing (I never use the æ forms, though, ’cause I find those aesthetically unpleasing) and they’re the standard in British spelling. Not because they’re older. To use a more extreme form of Chuckit’s example “that is not true”: Tod nē h₃reĝz h₁ésti.

Incidentally, many of the ae/oe spellings are in fact not older than their e counterparts. Many of these words, despite their Greek or Latin origins, were adopted into the English language via Old French, where they had already long been written with only an e (or rather, an é). It doesn’t even make sense to ‘restore’ some of these words to having an ae or oe, since some of them were taken directly from Greek (with no Latin intermediate stage) into French or English; they should, thus, rather be ‘restored’ to ai and oi, instead.

I'm going to guess translation widget since 理解 isn't the most common way of putting it.

Beyond that, I don't believe you can say that a person is "tadashii" (correct) — it's his statement that is tadashii. "Anata wa tadashii" sounds to me like you're trying to choose the correct person. (Obvious disclaimer: I am very much not a native speaker of Japanese.)

I don't think that's a real Japanese word. The word you replaced is "hitsuyou," which does mean "need" but still sounds wrong there to me.

Damn. The difference, in Chinese at least, is that 必要 is a noun whereas 必须 is a verb. I was kind of hoping the same would hold true in Japanese

Made perfect sense to me. Most that preach free speech mean "free to talk about stuff I want to talk about"

They usually are trying to shut everyone else up. "I am practicing my free speech by ranting over top of your speech so no one can hear you"

It's ironic.

And when you bust them on it they get defensive and call you a baby or start launching ad-hominems.
