Sometimes, after work, I'll walk from the beach and up Las Olas Blvd. to downtown. This is what I see along the way:

and no, Ambush: I can't afford any of it.

Nice pics Ice. I walk to work as well. I usually just see bums that ask me for money and smokes. I think I like your route better.

No, but I have the internet.

And it's one of FTL's nicknames. "The Venice of America"

But why? Because there are boats and a lot of water?

Or because of the bums?

Oh, and I fly into Lauderdale about twice a month or so.
All men are created equal, but what they do after that point puts them on a sliding scale.

Lots of cities are the (Venice/Athens) of the __________.

Edinburgh is the Athens of the North.
Amsterdam is the Venice of the North.
Deland, FL is the Athens of the South.
Ft. Lauderdale is the Venice of America.

These cities are all nice, I'm just saying that it's a common expression, and FTL doesn't have to be exactly like Venice to deserve that appellation.

True that. And in reality, we're really nothing like Venice(obviously actually), except for having many many miles of navigable inland waterways.

Deland is the armpit of what?

Boats... what a waste.

Because you're not in the middle of the ocean?

Do you walk into liposuction clinics and wonder why you see more fat chicks than thin ones?

I had a boat once.

You soon lose the fun of it and leave it parked and just sit on it and party.

Without flogging this to death, what to me makes Venice unique, and unlike all those other supposedly Venicey cities, is that it has no roads and all transport is by water. The lack of a constant background traffic drone gives it an amazing atmosphere.
