I'm lost there. ical is an independent app.

Google has it's own calendar?

I like the look of ical. How does it sync two computers, just with Google? I heard Apple icloud you need to be on Lion?

Google offers a calendar hosting service, which you can access via iCal on each machine.

Google it... plenty of instructions on the internet for how to set it up.

But you have to log into your Google account each and every time? That would probably be a deal breaker. I would much prefer an organic thing, something via live wifi. More fluid, no?

No, you don't have to log into google each time. You create a calendar on google, and then share it... you put the link into ical and it pulls it in. No login.

Of course to edit it you need to log into Google.

Then there's this cloud thing which should let you sync iCal between computers and devices but I'm lalalalalalalaala can't hear them telling me to upgrade.

No, iCal stores your Google credentials.

No; you provide your Google credentials to iCal when you set it up and you never have to login to Google again.

iCloud is just Apple's made up term for their low availability service. You're using Google's Calendar service instead of Apple's calendar service.

Google offers step by step instructions for iCal.

M,
what mean by low availability?

Any disadvantages to Google?

So no need for Lion, and you like it more? Does it work with Office 2011 Calendar as well?

You opinion Calendar ical vs Outlook 2011, I have to say if you are using the email client 2011 Outlook, it would probably be the way to go for calendar no?

MobileMess/iCloud has had a lot of outages.

I don't know of any downsides to using Google's calendar service.

You don't need Lion for anything except iCloud. Outlook 2011 doesn't support Google's calendar service.

If you're using Outlook with hosted Exchange, you'd use Outlook for both email and calendar. If you're using Outlook with an IMAP server, you'd use iCal for Google's calendar service.

thanks M, again, I'm self employed and don't understand exchange really.

So with 2011, then you do need icloud to sync calendar, and definitively need icould to sync contacts, correct? Which means you need Lion. If I'm mistaken, let me know.

I do think it would be easier to keep it all in one app, instead of using Outlook and also Ical.?

No. iCloud is an Apple service; I'm not advocating using it. Outlook syncs calendar/contacts to Exchange, which can then sync to other machines/phones.

Does anyone know of a solution where you can have the local weather forecast appear in iCal?

Google calendar syncing in Lion ical has been quite professionally and comprehensively shagged.

It's a disaster area.

it is very easy..... just follow the instructions......... Get a button on your browser toolbar that you can easily click to see upcoming events from Google Calendar, without ever leaving your page. And if you're on sites like Facebook or Evite, you can click the button to instantly add events to your calendar.
