No, not really.

IBM has been improving at a faster pace than MOT.

Not really. Freescale is still at 1.67 GHz. The G5 is faster per clock (for FP), and it looks like it's going to be at 2.7 GHz within the month.

But yeah, I'd like to see either faster clock speeds or else dual-core this year.

You know, a speed bump of 200Mhz... is actually kinda really sad... I mean I know moore's law is not that great of something to rely on but still... there's like no incentive for anyone with like even a Dual 2 to upgrade as far as I see...

200MHz is really pathetic, seems that it was everyones complaint with Motorola and that IBM would be like this.

I mean when did the Dual 2.5's come out anyway?

I dunno, things look stellar to me for AMD. AMD has dual-core chips with integrated memory controllers coming out this month, and they're likely to debut at 2.4 GHz. Indeed, it seems Intel is playing catchup to AMD, since Intel's dual-core solution is not as elegant as AMD's.

Now, you many be commenting about AMD's ability to reach only 2.6 GHz for its single-core CPUs, but a dual single-core 2.6 GHz Opteron box should perform a bit faster in real-life stuff (and I'm not talking about games either) than Apple's 2.7 GHz G5 dual.

That said, the G5 2.7 is at least in the right ballpark, and Tiger is looking good.

Unless it's a dual, dual-core 2.7GHz 970MP. Nothing like having over 10GHz at you fingertips.

200MHz in 8 months is better than 50MHz in a year when the G4 was released.

Unless the new G5s are all dual core, I'm guessing the G6 should make its debut sometime in 1.5 - 2 years.
Genius. You know who.

Well, actually Intel has gone up to 3.8 GHz. They'll also have dual-core this month, although their implementation of it isn't so great.

I just hope IBM can get the dual-core 970MP out by the end of this year, along with PCIe.

What does a dual opteron cost?* It's all well and good saying such and such is at blah-de-blah but if there are wild prices differences, comparisons can't really be made.

*Really. I have no idea where to even look for a decent opteron based system. Help a guy out would ya? Should I put money on the Mac costing more?

Oh well, least the Canadian price dropped a lot... before a dual 1.8Ghz G5 with 20inch would have been just about 4 grand, now it's just slightly over 3 grand. I think I might actually have to pick up one now... when I have three grand

Or is it? Because when you think about in in percentages, (which I can't be bothered to work out right now), the G4 development may in fact have been as good if not better than current G5 development!

I'm still waiting for IBM to make a nice 2 hz G4 or a nice cool running G5 for laptop consumption. IBM is doing a good job with chips, seeing how its selling them to everyone these days and using them in their own servers.

This is just a big "I told you so" to everyone who had their hopes up for vaporware Dual Core and G5 laptops, cell processors and calling the comparison "Moronic".

I smelt a rat over a year ago yet next to nobody agreed with me ~cough~ Eug (no offense buddy) and always wrong Zimphire

Sure Steve is still going to push Power PC for the next year cuz he wants to sell computers but a year from now he will be bashing the G5.
