1250lbs
350bhp (613hp/ton, that's more than the new Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse)
0-60 in 2.6 seconds
more grip than a chimp holding on to the last banana

How it looks:

How I felt:

If all you want is speed and joy, this is it. Yeah, your ass is 3" off the ground, and there's only one single creature comfort in the whole car (cup holder), unless you count the half-dome windscreens, but who cares?

The question that comes to my mind is: Why is Darth Vader driving it? Tie Fighter in for service?

The Darth Vader helmet is hilarious! I suppose this is the austere, anorexic sister of the Lotus Elise on steroids. The closest thing I've ever done was driving in a Lotus Elise SC with a 220 hp engine, and that thing was fast. The guy who drove it knows his stuff, too, he easily went into a circular traffic at 80 km/h without slowing down one bit.

I don't want to imagine what you can do with the Ariel Atom.

Several things happening on the automotive front. The most exciting news being that I was offered one of the new Pagani Huayras being imported to the US (they finally conformed to American safety standards for airbags). There was a sort of interview process, so to speak, asking why I wanted one and I had to be tight-lipped during the whole thing. Seriously. It wasn't like a car dealer trying to sell you on the vehicle, more like a father asking about your intentions with his daughter. He wasn't pitching the car or the brand, with these it's a pure seller's market. I even asked about that airhead Kim Kardashian shopping for one, and he said she was allowed to sit in their sample for publicity, but isn't being seriously considered as a potential buyer. True car enthusiasts only, please, socialites need not apply. I told him that I understand their founder's obsession, and I want to blast through the mountains in it making a whole lot of noise. That made him happy. A few weeks ago I wasn't interested, then I saw a series of interviews with the owner, Horacio Pagani, and started to dig into information about his life and the Huayra. After that I was hooked. He's kind of crazy, but in a good way.

The Pantera is coming along, we're sort of adjusting and customizing as we go. We ditched the aging iron 351 and are going with a much lighter aluminum small block Ford 427. For emissions and throttle response (and sanity) we're upgrading to EFI. Having a mechanic around is really cool, especially since he's now the voice of reason, "I want to put a turbo on the Pantera". "No you don't." "I don't?" "Trust me, you don't." "Okay."

Noooo! Pantera is my all-time favorite car name!

Two more additions, from the same place; one was intended, the other wasn't.

First, I've been looking for a Pur Sang Bugatti Type 51 reproduction, they're just amazing cars. Very clean and pure. So I found this one:

6976/width/350/height/700[/IMG]6977/width/350/height/700[/IMG]6978/width/350/height/700[/IMG]

Pur Sang (meaning "Thoroughbred") is an Argentinian company that makes licensed classic Bugatti reproductions with the same fit and finish as the originals, but with a few modern touches, if you want them. This one is mechanically the same as an actual Type 51, with only a change in the crankshaft for durability and the wheels (I'm going to change to wire). It has electric or you turn the crank to start, and it's relatively light and efficient, weighing 1800lbs. Powering it is a supercharged twin-cam inline 8 cyl engine producing 190bhp, which gets a surprising 20-24mpg on the highway, as long as you aren't flogging it. Power to weight, it's impressive and will keep up with most sports cars built today. That's what is so special about the Type 35, it was so far ahead of its time, and the Type 51 is the refinement of that with more power. Great car.

But, while I was talking with them they told me about the other car, it isn't a reproduction. This is a Type 38, one of 382 total, and one of 39 that came with a supercharger, making it a 38A.

6983/width/350/height/700[/IMG]6980/width/350/height/700[/IMG]
6981/width/350/height/700[/IMG]6982/width/350/height/700[/IMG]

It's the only one with ostrich upholstery and she underwent special coachwork by Lavocat et Marsaud. The bad part is that virtually nothing is known about this car from the time it left the factory in 1926 until it popped up again at a used car dealership in upstate New York (of all places) in `74. It was then nut and bolt restored by a Bugatti specialist, who spent a decade scrounging the original matching parts. Some things aren't the same, it's running a new pressure fed plain bearing crankshaft and a set of Carello rods. The pair of original blocks have been re-bored and fitted with over-sized pistons, taking the car up to Type 35T specification, and fitted with a reproduction original spec supercharger. It makes ~140bhp. The straight-cut gearbox is original, but re-geared and has been fitted with the "dog box" modification for ease of use (includes overdrive). It needs a refresh of the paint (it isn't original so no big deal), which we'll do. I do love that color, she's a real beauty.

This car is lovely. I'd be humming this the entire time I drove it:

"Near, far, in our motor car
Oh what a happy time we'll spend.
Bang Bang Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Our fine four fendered friend.
Bang Bang Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Our fine four fendered friend.
Your sleek as a thoroughbred.
Your seats are a feather bed.
You'll turn everybody's head today.
We'll glide on our motor trip
With pride in our ownership
The envy of all we survey.
Oh Chitty You Chitty
Pretty Chitty Bang Bang
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
We love you."

Yeah, I'm sure some enviros will go ape, but hell, it was done 90 years ago. It is a little fragile, not brittle or delicate, but can't be used as a DD or anything close to that. It will be cool for shows and maybe a parade or two, so the public can see it.

Woot, we bought a chassis dynamometer, a Mustang MD-AWD-500. A garage is going out of business, which is sad, and they're selling theirs.

That's going to kick lots of ass.

I was talking with mechanic Carl about the future of modern sports cars, and it seems rather bleak to us. Part of his livelihood is he restores and flips classic British and European cars. He doesn't make a ton of money at it, but it's his passion and he dearly loves them. You can really understand why, that analog experience is amazing and those cars are treasures. It's a shame legislators are doing everything they can to take that way, to make you safe and efficient.

And it ends up killing efficiency anyway. American Smart cars get about 20mpg less than the euro model since it has to meet US safety standards.

A euro Smart car is safer than a motorcycle. A ****ing golf cart is safer than a motorcycle.

Amen, dead-on with that. It's all so backwards it's pathetic.

We were talking in the garage yesterday about the Fisker Karma, massive flop. But, though it's going down in flames (NPI), we're considering getting one that's wrecked and converting it to just a regular ICE, maybe with a turbo 6 or an 8. It looks great, without all the batteries and electric motors it would be extremely light. That could be a very impressive car @3000lbs w/ 600bhp. Recycling or blasphemy? Hmm...

Today I drove a really magical car, an `88 E28 M5. It was freaking brilliant. There are some aftermarket mods; new coilover suspension, locking diff, and an extra 75hp over factory from its stroked and cammed 6 (@10.5:1), but nothing very drastic. It just goes and goes, with a very precise and analog feel. Like I said, great fun, and good value. It has a little over 78,000 miles. The guy wants to sell it, and I think I want to buy it.

Have you seen the pricing? $20-25k, maybe less, gets you one that's really well sorted. Great bargain there, for something that an average mechanically inclined person can fix in their driveway.

Check this:

http://bringatrailer.com/2012/11/13/bat-exclusive-72k-mile-1988-bmw-m5-2/

Edit: F*** it, I'm emailing the guy to bring that one back in the morning, it's too good to pass on.

Yeah, they aren't too expensive for one that's in very good shape.

Too bad by the time I would ever be able to afford that (and a garage for one) I doubt there will be any left. Along with my 2nd favorite, the E30 M3.

No Alfas, though I am on the list for a 4C next year. If the 8C keeps dropping in value I'm getting one of those, then swapping in a more capable suspension package. I've heard of a few owners going with Novitec's F430 setup with great success.

You know, I'm very against you buying the M5.

That's an amazing car that the "average Joe" can afford, and that the "average Joe" might be able to buy as their collector's car. You've got several cars more expensive than an average house; no need to be outbidding people on a $25k classic, unless the result is it sits in a lot rusting out somewhere.

Sounds like you've reached my 1% threshold!

To clarify, the guy had been trying to sell the M5 for 6 months and he approached me, offering to sell it (he's one of my mechanic's friends). I even paid his asking price ($23k), and didn't even beat him up over it. Damn, he even had the original window sticker, tool bag, spare, and manuals.

It drives like a dream, I think I'm going to use it as a DD.

Thanks. I won't say it's a sleeper, it ain't, but I doubt many will connect with what it is. So it's a nice stealth drive that only other gearheads will be able to fully appreciate. Also, it has a very good noise. It isn't super loud, but it's musical.

I'm not being a petty bitch, you know what I'm saying. But basically, you overpaid for the car because you can. Nothing wrong with that of course, but I still say that for a comfortable, middle-class guy, a car like that is the equivalent of your Lambo. So it's sort of a shame that you can just buy it without haggling and drive it when nothing else in your ~million-dollar fleet is worth taking out of the garage.

Did you not play in people's yards (or your own) as a child? Then again, I was raised in the south so I'm a slow ignorant f-tard according to some on the forum. Maybe walking/playing/occaisonally parking on grass is a huge faux pas elsewhere.

It's somewhat different when you have the implied or explicit permission of the owner.

I still don't park on the grass though. Why would I want to chew up the lawn?

Touche. I guess by parking on the lawn (mainly at my parents house whenever our ENTIRE family and all of our cars are there) I mean slightly over the slanted curb with two tires resting on the grass. If we parked completly in the street the street itself would be blocked and our driveway cant't fit 6 cars.

The guy hadn't been able to sell it, and I didn't overpay. It was worth every penny based on condition and mileage.

But whether you overpaid all depends on the market. If he's been trying to sell it for 6 months and could not, he was not asking the market price. You felt it was worth his asking price, but you clearly paid above what anyone else would pay. Ergo, you outbid everyone. It's still clearly worth that much to you, but you still must have overpaid, at least for your market. That is all.

I fail to see how that is "sort of a shame" that he is able to do that. Anyone else with the money could have bought that car as the guy had been trying to sell it. They didn't, he did. What's the problem?

Yeah, I didn't mention it was a shame. I just said facetiously that it was too bad he outbid peeps on the "every man's Countach" (or whatever) when it's probably the cheapest car he owns.

I'm just sayin: if that car was available for low-20s in my city, I'd probably make an offer. I'd hate to have the multimillionaire with 3 or 4 Ferraris outbid me by a grand.

Not really. The `71 MGB, `71 Bronco (bought it for $2000 back in `96), `78 Rolls Silver Wraith II, `86 Omni GLHS (talk about a hot hatch). All were less than the M5.

No bidding war. Yes, he'd had low-ballers, people offering 10-15k, but I agreed with him that it was worth much more than that.
