With some minor differences that's basically what I had in mind.
Move the platform up, replace the floor under the landing area with fences and they'll die from the first fall. I also want to find out if they will spawn on a pressure plate on grass. Then I could copy the grinder cell idea and it can be even smaller.

I need to apologize to everyone, I had a catastrophe in the grinder and after an hour of frustration and several deaths I restored from the 9:00 pm backup. Of course the files inside the world folder hadn't been saved since 7/11 at 3am. And of course I didn't even bother to make an backup before I restored.

I'm gonna go do something else before I cause even more damage.

----------------------------

Scratch that, Trash to the rescue. Though the grinder is still in ruins, it will take a group effort or time on peaceful to restore it. Don't go to my grinder unless you have death wish, it's exposed to the track.

Is there some kind of compromise where you can MCEdit the old grinder in?

What were you doing anyway? I'm going assume someone told you you had a very nice grinder there...

It was taking forever to kill cows and sheep because of how the glass was keeping them from jumping up into the lava. So I tried to replace the glass with signs. 4 creepers later I tried building a wall across in-front of the grinder, then I tried dropping wall in from above and while I was in finishing that and lighting it, a creeper blew that wall and made stairs for everyone else. Full iron armor couldn't save me.

that sounds... stressful.

I've tweaked my skin a bit more. Tried to build a house last night but kept getting creepered.

Grinder is fixed again. I cheated and spent 5 minutes on peaceful. I have a few pictures for the morbidly curious.

Here I've highlighted the creeper damage after I dropped a wall in from above. I've fixed most of it at this point. While removing the wall 4 more creepers make a 10 wide crater were the X is before I switched to peaceful which is a feet since it was full of water.

Here's a shot of the business end of the grinder. Spiders don't like to take the turn. I'm showing this because everything back to the lower lava stream was gone. I had filled it all in with gravel from the other side so just image an 6 wide wall of gravel.

It kills cows and sheep 2x faster now, but not as fast as it kills 2m tall mobs.

I've made a small modification, to the left is the lava blade viewing room and to the right is the MSPCM. Until modified further the grinder does not produce pork. Unfortunately they make it right through the lava knifes.

Interesting. Glass panes instead of or in addition to blocks?

Addition. I also read food will be stackable and they're adding a lot of new types (steak, chicken looks like a lock).

If those window panes act like the fence blocks, I have to say they'll be mostly pointless to me.

Edit: Also, bent corner glass? Give us glass steps!

First details on Minecraft’s XP system. Notch: “When you die you lose all levels. You lose all XP” | PC Gamer
Yesterday, Notch posted an image of a massive mountain on his Twitter feed. But that’s not all. Look closely at said image. See the bar that looks a bit like an XP bar? It is an XP bar, but it also brings something extra – permadeath. In a forthcoming update to Minecraft, not only will you be able to gain levels. You’ll lose your levelling progress if you die.

“I’m a big roguelike fan,” explains Notch. “It’s really fun. The idea is that you level up really, really fast. You can grind away and level up fast if you want to, or you can just play as normal and level up that way. The longer you play, the bigger the risk of dying becomes. It’s the part that really works. If it feels like it’s too harsh, we might make it half or something like that. But the fact that you lose everything – you lose all your inventory anyways.”

The Minecraft developer is still figuring out how players will level. “I’m not entirely sure on how the levelling is going to work, because that part isn’t as fun. We’re trying to figure out something that is fun, and kinda lightweight. We’re thinking of getting an automated XP system. It’s not implemented in any way that makes any kind of sense at the moment.”
After 1.8 this is going to be a very different Minecraft.

too hot to play. Too much other stuff going on.

However, I've bought a copy for the kid and will have to set him up. How hard was it to set up a local server Blaze?

I tried to log on for a hour-long session or so, but realized that it runs like crap on Lion, and bailed. Also, I haven't been able to log onto multiplayer.

I've been neck-deep in Infamous 2, Tiger 12, and NCAA 12. I'm afraid my rabid interest might be waning, though I see myself returning. I still want to complete Salt Lake City, at the very least.

New mob

Someone made a huge Aether mod
‪Minecraft - Aether Mod Spotlight Part 1: First Steps‬‏ - YouTube

I suppose this means we won't the see the "real" one from Notch this year... if ever.

If they can **** with player placed blocks, the future keeps getting worse and worse

Edit: It appears Notch's entire goal is to take a light-hearted creative game and make it a painful grind.

notice that the photo is taken in the dark, without any torches. They may be repelled by light instead of just not spawning. Unfortunately the player isn't close enough to trigger an attack so we can't tell if they're hostile.

Seeing as Zombies were the second Mob added, and the fist of the current mobs, peaceful wasn't ever in the cards.

I'm starting to lose my mind with this game. I still can't stand having to use shears for wool. If they make torches finite, I'm quitting.

Exactly.

Crap, make it smooth stone shears, I don't care. Just don't make me use valuable iron for a tool that is destroyed after knocking out 20 blocks of leaves.

Speaking of which, leaves burning through tools needs to be fixed. I'm sorry, but it should not destroy a sword when I can use my fists or a ****ing piece of paper to do the same thing infinitely. And at the very least, make the axe immune. Having to constantly switch to torch to remove a few leaf blocks so I continue chopping wood is pedantic as ****.

The Endermen are peaceful. If you look straight at them, they freeze and look at you. When you look away again, they run fast. And teleport.

They run TOWARDS you, not away. So if you happen to look at one, do not look away.

(they stop being peaceful if you look straight at them)
Ugh. Hope there's a set distance and a quick passing mouseover doesn't count.

In preparation for my vacation (which starts today) I've moved the server to my FreeNAS box. Besides the "fun" of installing java I need someone besides me to log in to verify it all works right.

No, that's legit in game. I have an inkling its related to whatever they were using for the GTA IV mods.

It's official, Minecraft will soon suck.
PAX: Details On the Next Minecraft Update - PC Preview at IGN
Lastly, players will soon be battling Silverfish. These monsters lurk inside the very blocks that players mine, making each swing of a pickaxe a potentially violent affair.
A hunger meter is being added, and the only way to gain health is to max out your meter. This means there's no more button mashing the food key at the last minute in a heated battle, as consuming takes time, with health regeneration taking even longer.
