Call of Duty: Black Ops review event, press gifts detailed
"Two weeks before the game's launch, I was flown from San Francisco to LAX; from there, I was driven to Santa Monica airport where I was given a flight helmet customized with my gamertag," Tae Kim wrote about his experience reviewing the game. "I was then put into a helicopter and flown to Ojai, California, a small town about two hours north of Los Angeles. After landing in a field, I was driven to the Ojai Valley Inn and Spa, where I was given a posh suite to stay in for three days." The suite had a 360, a copy of the game, and a nice 3D television hooked up to a surround-sound system.

There was a separate area with 30 stations set up so reviewers could try the multiplayer portion of the game. "I was also given a Mad Catz Call of Duty Black Ops branded headset," Kim wrote. "At the end of the trip, I was allowed to keep the flight helmet and the Mad Catz headset. All travel and accommodations, including food, were covered by Activision."
Ughhhhhh

Gamasutra - News - Bleszinski Defends Use Of Violence In Gears Of War As 'Slapstick'
Speaking with the BBC, Bleszinski said: “When we create our games we use a slapstick type of violence, we poke each other in the eyes and hit each other with frying pans like the old Warner Brothers cartoons.”
I don't think the term slapstick is what he's looking for, but I agree that the gore is so over the top as to be unrealistic and silly. As I've mentioned many times, I stuck with the game for so long just because gibbing someone with a shotgun was so god-damned entertaining.

I love how in the press shots for Kinect the players are always shown in living rooms about the size of my house with a sofa 20 feet away from the TV.

This Is Apparently The Ultimate Gaming Advantage

I'm not clear on what's going on with the thumb-paddle on the right, but the inverse triggers for X and Y are interesting concepts.

Speaking of Guitar Hero related...

Viacom to sell Harmonix

Viacom originally purchased Harmonix (the then developers of Guitar Hero) in September 2006 for $175 million, but have decided that slow sales and loses is enough for them to pull out of the console games market completely.

Harmonix lost a reported $65 million in the quarter ending 30th September 2010 according to Tom Dooley (Chief Operating Officer for Viacom).

Viacom Chief Executive Officer Philippe Dauman is quoted as saying:

"Our decision to exit this business reflects our strategy of focusing entirely on what we do best. The console games business requires expertise and scale we don’t have."
No shit. A $65 million quarter loss definitely constitutes a bail out.

Like i've mentioned before, i'm primarily a single player gamer (with some local multi player). It just seems like the games on the Wii do not cater to that, and the PS3 does (Uncharted, God of War, Last Guardian, Ratchet & clank, Dead Space, BioShock, Assassins creed, etc).

First party Nintendo titles can only go so far, and i am disappointed that third parties did not deliver on the Wii platform.

But despite all that, I still think Nintendo(for itself) made some of the best decisions business wise and technically.... hence the sales, profits, "mindshare", etc.... i still have an enormous respect for their contributions and innovations in this industry.

I got a PS3 because the games i like to play are on the system(and the quality of the hardware is within respectable limits). And it is a decent piece of kit. I would even go far as to admit that i have possibly turned on my PS3 every day this year...and my Wii was turned on maybe 3-5 times since January. That being said, 95% of the time, im using the PS3 as a media center.

I just got the God Of War collection and look forward to playing it.

On that note.... i'm sort of over the fact that the PS3-Slim is not backwards compatible.... God Of War and the Team Ico games will all be on the system, and the only one missing from my list is Okami. So i'm a happy camper..... and i actually recommend the PS3 to anyone.... even if it's just for a BluRay player.

Cheers

PS>>And with GT5(which will be my first GT game) out in a couple of weeks... i'm very satisfied with gaming on the PS3

I got the Wii port the day it was released and gave it away the next day. It was an appalling effort..the pre-rendered scenes were not redone, so it had the PS2 paper look, the in game visuals were overly saturated and did not have the paper effect(which was one of the reasons i liked the game in the first place) so it looked and felt extremely unpolished. The studio that ported it put in minimal effort, and couldn't even get a port to look right. </end rant>

Yes Sensei . I got the first uncharted like 4 months ago.... I still haven't popped it into the system(distracted by starcraft2).

A little industry analysis...... With the lack of an HD console from Nintendo, and a surprisingly strong library for the Move, I think the PS3 is primed to be positioned as the 'Wii HD' this holiday season. Sony needs to get the word out there, and flood the channel with bundles tho.

Cheers

That's the problem. It doesn't appear (yet) that Sony is going to be able to push their product even 10% as hard as Microsoft is. People know about the Kinect. I'm not so sure about the Move.

However, the PS3 as a whole seems to have a lot more momentum these days. I'll be interested to see how well it performs during the holidays.

Also, Uncharted 1 is really good, but pales in comparison to 2. Definitely one of the top three single-player games I've ever played.

I'll be picking it up today, as I had it pre-ordered.

I don't know if I'll be playing it right away, though. I might start it this weekend. So far, both the single player and multiplayer look good.

My plan is to play Assassin's Creed Brotherhood and Halo:Reach, instead of CoD:Black Ops. By the sounds of it, I'm not missing much in CoD: Black Ops.

I'll have to go resurrect my thread for it.

Tuesday News: Quick Edition

NBA Jam on PS3 and Xbox getting day-one online multiplayer patch | Joystiq
Has nothing to do with being rushed out the door.

Would You Buy Half A Game Now And Pay For The Rest Later?
I thought we already did this, and it's called "DLC"

No seriously:
Fable 3 'Understone Quest Pack' and 'Exclusive Hair Pack' DLC coming Nov. 23 | Joystiq
Also included in the Understone Quest Pack is the "Shooting Range" – the Mercenary Camp is now a tourist attraction! – and the "Wheel of Misfortune," in which Reaver's arena has been recycled into a standalone feature.
I reached the Merc Camp about 1/3rd of the way to game, and when I finished I could never figure out why this obvious shooting range never worked… til now.

Reaver's arena was also similarly odd that it didn't work after the fact. I was confused by the obvious oversight.

Questions now answered. For 400 msp.

VUDU hits the PS3.

The question I asked: What the crap is VUDU?

First Netflix, then Hulu Plus, and now VUDU. The movie rental service is making its way onto PlayStation 3 just in time for Thanksgiving later this month -- November 23rd, to be exact. If you're familiar with Walmart's recently-acquired video service, you know the drill: on-demand HD titles streamed for a fee, up to 1080p and Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 surround sound. The interface will be the same as every other VUDU iteration -- until mid-December, that is. That's when, as we've been told, the company plans to roll out version 2.0 of its UI. In addition to being more streamlined, there's ratings, recommendations, and most interestingly, support for PS3's Move controller.

Tony Hawk: Shred wobbles first week at retail | Joystiq
In a video game's lifetime, the first-week sales are often the most crucial, representing some of biggest numbers a publisher will ever see for a game. That's why Robomodo's second peripheral-based Tony Hawk title, Shred, seems to have gotten off to a grim start, selling just 3,000 copies in its first week at retail.
Just kill the franchise or move it to a longer cycle Activision. Jesus Christ. I can't imagine they made money on the last iteration, either.

Whoops, forgot it was NPD time.

October NPD: NBA 2K11 tops charts, Xbox 360 'best selling console in 2010' | Joystiq

Top 10 bestselling games for October 2010:

1. NBA 2K11 - 360, PS3, PS2, PSP, Wii, DS - Take 2 Interactive
2. Fallout: New Vegas - 360, PS3, PC - Bethesda Softworks
3. Medal of Honor - 360, PS3, PC - Electronic Arts
4. Fable III - 360 - Microsoft
5. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II - 360, PS3, Wii, PC, DS - LucasArts
6. Halo: Reach - 360 - Microsoft
7. Just Dance 2 - Wii - Ubisoft
8. FIFA Soccer 11 - PS3, 360, Wii, PS2, PSP, NDS, PC
9. Madden NFL 11 - 360, PS3, Wii, PS2, PSP
10. WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2011 - PS3, 360, PS2, Wii, PSP

I imagine 2k11 got a nice boost from the Elite bust.
Fable III manages to clock in at 4 on a single platform; Reach shows strong sales by returning for second month.

Xbox 360 set to be 2010's best-selling console in the US

The Nintendo DS was the best-selling hardware for October, according to the NPD sales information for the US. The Xbox 360 came in second place, but that's OK. "The Xbox 360 has generated the most unit sales among the console platforms on a year-to-date basis as of this month," NPD analyst Anita Frazier said. "The Nintendo DS remains the best-selling hardware system, overall."

While the NPD Group no longer shares specific information for each system, Microsoft let us know that it sold 325,000 Xbox 360s, up 30 percent from 2009. "During the month, Xbox 360 secured six of the top 10 console game titles, including the top four titles overall, a feat never-before accomplished by a current-generation console," Microsoft announced. That's a pretty good way to head into the holiday season.
And of course, the enjoyable and ever-damning:
Sony and Nintendo have not shared any sales information with the press.

I wonder what all those impressive 360 sales numbers would look like if you removed the ones that I bought.

Also, how is Smackdown vs. Raw quietly putting up nice sales numbers after years of wrestling being "dead?"

It's a bit of a tired question, along with "I wonder how many of those Nintendo Wiis are still in use" and "I wonder how many of those PS3 are used for anything more than Blu-Rays"

LIVE Activity for week of Nov 8 - Xbox Live's Major Nelson
With all of my travel over the past few months, and the recent KINECT launch I have finally found time to get back into the groove of posting the LIVE Activity list.
And the fact that you found time to post a week people would demand your head over if you didn't post is sheer coincidence, no doubt.
Nevermind that you still found time to post about all the shit you guys are selling.

While the list has been on hiatus, I’ve decided to take the opportunity to think about how to make it a little more interesting. Here is the new schedule: Every other week, I’ll be posting the below list. This is the same list that you’ve come to know over the years. During the alternate weeks I don’t post this list, I’ll be posting a brand new list showing activity on the Xbox LIVE Marketplace, specifically the top items purchased.
I'm assuming he means DLC, as Arcade titles are already sorted by sales.

Without further adieu...

Xbox 360 Top LIVE Titles (based on UU’s)
1 Call of Duty: Black Ops
2 Modern Warfare 2
3 Halo: Reach
4 FIFA Soccer 11
5 Fable III
6 Fallout: New Vegas
7 Call of Duty: WaW
8 Madden NFL 11
9 Call of Duty 4
10 Halo 3
11 NBA 2K11
12 GTA IV
13 Red Dead Redemption
14 Gears of War 2
15 Battlefield: Bad Co. 2
16 Kinect Adventures!
17 Medal of Honor
18 NHL 11
19 Forza Motorsport 3
20 FIFA 10

That's right, Reach is under MW2 and Halo 3 has fallen down all the way to 10 (and under CoD4).
Halo is dead, friends.

I know I got tired of Reach very, very quickly, but I'm actually gaining interest in BO (although I've barely had time to play in the last 5 days).

Also, I feel strange every time I abbreviate it "BO."

In dollar terms, that's $250.2 million in profit, which is a lot more than the company made from the sale of new games, which "only" brought in $182.4 million.

Halo is dead, friends.
Halo is far from dead (I love Dakar's extreme exageration), it's in 3rd place. And amazingly Halo 3 is in 10th spot, I would have expected worse.

What I do find amazing though, is that there are 4 versions of CoD in the top 10, on that list. What is everyone on Xbox live playing some version of CoD? playing 2-3 different versions of CoD? I would have though CoD 4 or CoD:WAW would be below 10 by now.

CoD:MW2 being in second place probably makes sense. All those CoD:BO that hate CoD:BO are heading back to CoD:MW2.

Nice to see Fable III's got a spot (#5).

No, I'm measuring it by its previous status. There's only two Halo gems to divide the population by, but there's 4 CoD game and they're all ranked higher than the second Halo game (which never dipped lower than the Top 3, well ever). That's unbelievable. Then you look at Reach which has been out two months and it's being beaten by a year-old game. That's also amazing.

Maybe you'd like the term washed-up better? There. If this trend continues it looks like Halo is washed-up.

Gran Turismo 5 has 50 minute install, can do while played- Destructoid
Word is that Gran Turismo 5 takes 50 minutes to install, and up to 10 GB of hard disk space. CVG linked us to a forum post where one guy that apparently has the game says it takes this long, and that the "space taken is actually about 6.4GB, but that space gradually unpacks as you're playing to be closer to the previously mentioned 10GB."
I don't understand why this shit takes so long on the PS3.

The good news:
"GT5 gives users the option of an install," Sony says. "This makes loading times throughout much faster but is not a requirement when first playing. If users choose not to install the data straight away, it will do it in stages as new areas, tracks, etc. are access during normal gameplay."

I recall reading an article around the time of the PS3's release that said it has something to do with the PS3 only having a 2x BD drive.

So they left it in there when they made the slim PS3. One less reason to upgrade my fat PS3 to a slim.

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

From what I have hear it has to do more this the encrypt/decryption of game installs, which makes sense to me as at 9MB/sec transfer a 4GB file should take about 7 and a half minutes. Yet a few games at that size or smaller take 20 minutes.

I like the PS3 the most. The Nintendo Wii has
a really cool interface but it gets tiring after awhile.
I also like the X-box but since the PS3 also doubles
as a blueray player, I like the PS3 more.

That makes more sense. I couldn't imagine the r/w speed was that inhibitive.

Monday News

Sony revealing new PS3 exclusive Dec. 12 | Joystiq
Funniest guess made so far: GT6.

Vivendi boss says Activision is over Infinity Ward drama, studio 'reconstructed' | Joystiq
Activision has been real chatty lately, mostly talking up Treyarch and praising them, which is pretty transparent when the studio that made Call of Duty famous got completely upended. They almost sound like they're trying to talk themselves into half of what they say.

The Music Game Is Dead (Long Live The Music Game?)
In 2008, music games - think series like Rock Band, Guitar Hero, SingStar & DJ Hero - made over $1.6 billion. In 2009, that dropped by almost half, down to $870 million, and in 2010, well...things are looking even worse.
I don't think this surprising (double less so given Activison's absolute ravishing of Guitar Hero), but as someone who enjoys this stuff infrequently, I think it's a shame if this means support will dry up for the games in the coming year or two. I do wonder how much of a profit they turn on this stuff, sometimes.

Ars reviews the OnLive microconsole, service
They really need to get a guy in Iowa on DSL to give this stuff a counter-review, for balance's sake.

That said, the numerous depictions of aroused animals and men in suits is never tiresome.

“We’re doing simultaneous in-house development on the PS3, 360, and PC versions of the game,” wrote Kline. “We all know that the PS3 is powerful but unique console with its own strengths and challenges."

"But compared to the PC," he said, "the Xbox 360 is challenging too. So instead of declaring a 'lead platform' and porting the game to the others, we’ve instead changed the game engine so that all platforms look (to a programmer) more like a PS3."
Blast! Look for the PS3 version to kick some ass.

Gamasutra - News - In-Depth: Where Do Wii Sales Go From Here?
To at least beat the annual total for 2007, Nintendo will have to sell 2.85 million systems in the last two months of 2010 – in which case November and December would account for 45% of the system's 2010 sales. Given the stronger competition from Sony and particularly Microsoft this year, that seems unlikely to us.
Regardless, there is the issue of software sales, which in the case of the Wii appear to closely correlate with hardware sales. It is our theory that the Wii's strong software sales in past years were driven primarily by new Wii owners (those within the first six months of ownership). As the hardware sales have fallen this year, so have the software sales rates.

According to tie ratios provided to us by the NPD Group, and comparing with data released by Nintendo during its recent investor briefing, Wii software sales rates have dropped by over 50%.

Halo Wars Goes Dark On Dec. 15
"This is undoubtedly part of Microsoft's efforts to wind down the Halo Wars community by making competitive ranked game play impossible and providing no way for people to view game statistics," writes Remember Ensemble Studios, a repository of materials from the game's developer (now defunct).
I don't understand why MS would want to throw cold water on a bunch of Halo fans (no matter how small or niche). I can't imagine it's that large of a drain on their resources. It's certainly no Halo 2 situation.

I'm a Nintendo FanBoy for life, so my opinion will always be bias when it comes to video games but as true gamer you got to appreciate the other consoles and their games!

In the USA the Wii is slacking and the PS3 and Xbox360 constantly vie for the number one spot while in Japan Wii is the top dog while PS3 and 360 fight over Nintendo's scraps. Ironic huh.....
