The G5 has an analog audio in hole on the back. Now, from what I read somewhere I can't just plug a mini-jack PC microphone into it. In fact, I apparently can't even plug a line-in device like a CD player into it. Anyone know what makes this plug special and what kind of stuff I *CAN* plug into it?

If you use a mic with it you need to use a preamp. That's the only limitation I'm aware of.

You can plug line-level devices (those that don't require preamplification - tape deck, CD player, etc.) directly into it and record. The two items that are not usually line-level are turntables and microphones, which typically require preamplification, although there are exceptions (for instance, Griffin's FinalVinyl software allows you to record a turntable signal directly, without preamplification).

The main problem is monitoring (i.e. listening to, in real time) whatever it is you're plugging into it. It doesn't appear that you can just plug a device in there and listen to it through your SoundSticks - as far as I can tell, it's only intended for recording. Some recording apps seem to provide for monitoring, others don't.

If I'm mistaken in any way, I'd be happy to hear from others.

You mean those really noisy 1/8" holes in the back with loose solder and sloppy play and construction behind them? These have got to be the absolutely poorest 1/8" ports I've ever used. Seriously. My daughter has a $25.00 c.d. player with firmer 1/8" port feel. I'm so angry I could spit. I haven't had this $3,000.00 computer long enough for this crap! I'm not the only one either. Many complaints about these noisy "holes". Avoid them at all costs. Using them will render them useless. Sorry, 'tis the truth. I don't know whether to return this machine to have those sloppy ports re-sloppified or just go with the optical ports.

(more ranting)
The audio in and out ports on my G5 are absolutely perfect. Your problem obviously isn't present in all G5s, so you should probably contact Apple to get them to fix it.

good point proton, but all too evident in a number of them. Search the net, much info about noisy audio out. Supposedly related to the power supply and may even be evident using USB audio interfaces. In the cases I've read, replacing the power supply didn't help either.
