In a bit of irony, I read the story here on Yahoo! News.
Doesn't say if there will be a Mac client at first. I would doubt it, being that Google has ignored the Mac for most of it's desktop type applications. But we'll see.
Hopefully, it will be open so we can use it in Adium, Proteus, Fire, etc. Maybe Jabber based?

If the rumors that say it will use the same protocol as Jabber are true, then it would be good news.

If it's Jabber compatable I could almost garuntee that Apple will right away update with OS X.4.3 with new features in iChat. It already support Jabber, they'd just add some text to explain how to set it up for GTalk or whatever. That said I really think they should call it G-abber. You could actually pronounce it the same as Jabber, only it'd be Gabber... yah...

If it uses Jabber, then Google almost doesn't need to even bother with a client. iChat supports it in Tiger, and so do Proteus, Adium, and Fire.app. The real news would be if it used the IM gateways that Jabber is famous for. This would seriously rock., but I have my doubts. To be honest, I'm also worried about the potential for Google to store and analyze my chat logs to send targeted ads. This is Google, after all; index and analysis is what they do.
By the way, there's already an IM client called Gabber; it's for Linux/X11 but it could probably be made to run on OSX/X11 as well. It hasn't seen much new development in a while, though.

Yeah, if it's Jabber based, that would be nice. I could use Adium or even iChat. But like Millennium (two l's two n's) pointed out, the IM gateway thing would be great. It's not like they don't have enough server power to run the gateways.
I can see Google leading Jabber into the forefront. Right now it's just out there, but since nobody is really using it, nobody uses it. Google could change that.
The potential of Jabber is to make IM like POP/SMTP for email. Doesn't matter what client you use, it just is email. IM should be the same. Google backing Jabber could make it that.

I think heard other rumors that Google will be very open to 3rd party implementation no matter what is used. So that means GAIM and Adium should support it kinda quick once the API is out.

GoogleTalk is now online and operational. To set up iChat to use GoogleTalk:
1) Go to account settings
2) Add a Jabber account with talk.google.com as the server.
3) Use a Gmail username/password.
4) Fire up the Jabber account.
I'm [email protected] if anyone wants to add me to their buddy list.

Freaking sweet
I think if anyone can make Jabber easy to use it'd be Google. That said, I have to wonder if they'll actually use the Gateways, I mean AOL got pissed when MS had MSN messenger connecting to their network... so... whatever though. Either way this is good. Apple just now needs to let iChat have multiple Jabber accounts so I can keep using a gateway for MSN

Yes. From the Google Talk iChat support page:
Once you've configured iChat to connect to the Google Talk service, you may receive a warning message that states your username and password will be transferred insecurely. This error message is incorrect; your username and password will be safely transferred.

Check you have the server configured as talk.google.com, not talk.gmail.com.

Naturally, of course, you need a GMail account to get in. Oh, well. I was looking forward to this, but I'll just get a Jabber account elsewhere, I guess. Compatibility without all the spooky e-mail indexing crap.

How disappointing is it that there is no Mac client at launch?
I'm not going to get all excited about Google running their own Jabber server. Hell, I have my own through Dreamhost.

I don't think it's all that disappointing, to be honest. I suspect most Mac users would rather use iChat anyway, and Google provides instructions for that.

I've considered doing my own as well, and adding IM gateways. What has your experience been with Jabber?

Then again, maybe not. It looks like Google Chat doesn't talk to the rest of the Jabber network, supposedly for spam-fighting purposes.

It doesn't, yet. But in the FAQ they say:
We believe strongly in user choice and open standards, and we are committed to letting users access Google Talk using the client and platform of their choice, as well as to enabling our users to talk with users from other service providers.
So I'm guessing they plan to open it up at some point in the Beta phase.

Not to the existing Jabber network, they don't. Check out the Service Choice section of the developer FAQ; it looks like they're going to build their own network and close it up. This bodes ill for the open Jabber network, to say the least.

I'm pretty disappointed in Google's effort. With Google Maps they blew me away. Now I'm underwhelmed.
Here's why:
First, no Mac client out of the box. I realize we're still in beta and it's "coming" (supposedly), but for once, I'd like to see an IM offering that offers the Mac equal features to the Windows client.
Second, it doesn't do anything really "revolutionary." I only know one person who uses Gmail that I would IM on a regular basis. At least I only know that one person's address. There is no member directory search to help me find others.
Third, it's Jabber, so why not open up some gateways and make it talk to other clients?
Again, I know that Google has plans beyond what is there. Hopefully, they'll turn it into something worth my time, someday.

does the world need another chat system to deal with? Adium can't even keep a stable connection to icq, and now I have to deal with people who have gmail IM accounts? yuck.
I would like to somehow force everyone I know to switch to skype.

[email protected] is my user name
And for the record, yes we need another one, cause the current ones are crap and they're not getting any better. MSN is uber bloated, AIM has gotten crappier ever since version 4, ICQ is dead, and Yahoo is crap. Yes there is room for a more iChat like program on the Windows side. And the fact is with Google we have a much better chance of having a feature complete version than we'll ever have with MSN.
When Google makes an official client for OS X it will certainly be much better talking to people on that than the official MSN client. Which is the only thing Canadians seem to use.

This is what i want the mac client to be able to do:
1. 100% fast and reliable file transfers between macs and pcs.
2. Video/Audio conferencing, also mac/pc
3. A way to check my Gmail from within the client
4. Addressbook integration
5. Customizable themes
I won't accept anything less!
