What do people think about cougars? The non-cat ones, that is.

To each, its own.
High chance they'll be very experienced and light on the drama.

As displayed in Cougar Town.

My younger brother has a cuban cougar/sugar mamma. I have to wear mental blinders when they come to my mother's house because she likes to show off her "assets."

Ben Franklin was the original cougar bait. He had some favorable things to say about eager and experienced widows.

I've dated a few older women, several who were 10+ years older than me, and the age thing never came up. I can add, though, that older means better in most if not every aspect.

Chongo's post illustrates the difference I see between "cougars" and "older women." Specifically, contrary to The Godfather's assertion, cougars have a special brand of drama which they tend to bring with them everywhere. Most I've met seem to have been "pampered" girls who simply expect the world to accommodate their wishes - and they are not at all shy about using their "assets" to manipulate people toward their own aims and ends.

To contrast, older women (let's go with "5-10 years older than the guy" as a range) have impressed me as mature, capable, independent and intelligent people who don't need the world to cave to their whims because they are well grounded and able to take care of themselves. They don't need drama because they are self confident enough to not need the constant attention that goes with artificial drama. Those I have known have developed relationships with younger guys not because of age (a big contrast with cougars), but because of the guy.

I think of cougars the way I think of high maintenance young women - the kind that have to have the most recent styles, be fully made up before anyone sees them, and who get upset at a tiny snag in their manicure: they're entertaining to look at, but best kept at a distance. Kind of like big fireworks...

I think the term is demeaning.

Older women =
1) They don't tell
2) They don't swell
3) And they're grateful as hell

That saying has been around for a long time. When I was younger, older women were the best. Ever. Period.

Sorry, I thought the term was generic. This other type of cougar I'm not familiar with: the needy, whiny ones.

Nope, that's the young chicks I thought.

Well... if you're in your 50s and she's in her 70s, she's not really a "cougar".
