Last week, my girlfriend and I went up the Canyon to a place called Donut falls. About a half hour from here. It's part of the forest service (the falls are actually on private property, but the owner lets people in). Anyway, we were walking and coming to a path, we stopped. No more than 50 feet in front of us was a moose snacking on some leaves.

My girlfriend was a little freaked out, it's hard to tell what a moose will do, but we got some pics. I've never seen a live moose before. It was pretty exciting for me.

"Females can be extremely protective of their young, and extreme caution should be exercised when approaching a cow moose. The overwhelming majority of human fatalities attributable to moose occur in motor vehicle collisions with moose."

So true. They look clumsy and slow but they are damn fast and kinda mean.

We've had a momma moose and her baby around my family's place in Red Lodge, MT the last couple years.

One charged my mom when she tried to take a pic of it. If she didn't climb a tree it would have killed her.

Yea, except for polar bears, moose are probably the most dangerous North American mammals there are. You are lucky to be alive. :-P

Yup I've had several encounters with mooses (meese?) in Montana. Never had any trouble, but you hear some bad stories...

My dad was fishing on the Clarks Fork up near Crazy Creek campground in the Beartooths when he acccidentally found himself between a momma moose and her baby.

He discreetly crossed the river and got the hell out of the way.

For some reason, the word 'meese' always makes me laugh

Last time I was in Jasper National Park in Alberta I almost stepped on a moose that had bed down on the snow by the side of a lake. Scared the crap out of me when it jumped up. I have some video on my other computer of me watching it browse from about 15 feet away, which is far too close...but I made sure to keep some trees in between....

In other news, I think Newfoundland has one of the world's highest population densities of moose. It's pretty crazy. It was fairly common for us to see moose in the back yard or moose tracks lots of mornings on the way to school. Driving on the highway at night is pretty dangerous in some spots; those suckers really take you out.
