I have a Sony digital camcorder that connects fine with my PC desktop.
I tried using iMovie and the iBook for the first time but iMovie would not detect the firewire that is attached to the camcorder.

I have the camcorder set to VTR (play mode).
Turned on iMovie and clicked on the Camcorder icon next to the scissor icon on iMovie. I checked the Help but didn't help.

What should I check next. The camera is a Sony DCR-TRV520.

Sometimes just unplugging and re-connecting the camera . or restarting iMovie or turning the camera off and on - may help.
Sometimes also the plug may not be seated correctly - all pretty basic things to try but one or the other has helped me from time to time

Hope it works for you

good luck
