Hi,
My iBook mic has stopped working (due to a pinched cable). It will work fine if I close my lapbook about 90% of the way. Anyway, I bought a new USB mic and my Skype buddies tell me it is very week and sometimes unintelligible. Can this usb mic be fixed? Is it because my iBook is 2004 vintage with USB.1 not 2? Any ideas on how to get a cheap mic to work?

Is there any software control in Skype or elsewhere over the microphone volume?

Skype only allows you to specify the audio source/output devices, and the controls are left to the system configuration. Get on a call with one of your buddies and then launch System Preferences and select the Sound preference. In the Input tab, make sure to select your USB device and adjust the Input volume slider accordingly, dragging it to the right to increase the volume. You might want to play with the "Use ambient noise reduction" to see what works well.
