I couldn't wait to upgrade so I took the plunge. I am transferring data between the two machines now.

Previous system was a PowerMac G5 2Ghz. Standard configuration.

Specs are:

PowerMac G5 2.7Ghz
2GB RAM
2x250 GB SATA HD
16x Dual Layer DVD Burner
Radeon X800 XT (arrives tomorrow)
23" Apple Cinema Display

2.7Ghz G5

23" ACD

Transferring

Congratulations on your purchase. . . but you really need to warn people if you're going to place large inline images in your thread by placing some notice in the thread title. It does not matter to me on my fast connection, but it is a forum rule.

I only see one HD in there, where's the other one?

And congrats on the upgrade. Put up some benchmarks? What model did you have before? 2.0 or 2.5?

I took the pic before I put in the second HD. My previous machine was a 2Ghz G5.

I got the X800 XT for $300 on eBay. It only takes up one slot unlike the Nvidia card.

I am considering replacing the standard vid card with an X800. Any reason not to? Big difference?

Very big difference. The 6800 and X800 are in a class of their own.

It is much smaller, much quieter, draws less power. And yes, faster.

I disagree- it looks like the reflection of an overhead light is what you're actually seeing as the pink cast. Look at the frame of the monitor- it's got a highlight up in the upper right corner.

The best way to tell is to turn all the lights off and check it for yourself.

You're right, it is from a light. No pink cast on the 23" ACD. No dead pixels either. It is perfect.

Awesome, but I have one question... could you pull out the video card (make sure your machine is unplugged when removing/inserting a vid card) -- and take a few pics of it? Us modders have been curious about the 9650 and its AGP port and whatnot... If it's actually that similar to the 9600XT (and I'm positive it is), I might be interested in buying it from ya (you're going to get an x800 anyway so once you get that you won't need this).. if you want

Looking forward to seeing this Thanks! And uh, congrats on the g5

How quiet is your new G5 compared to your old 2ghz G5? This is important to me. Thanks!

Congrats!! Nice nice machine.
I have the original Dual 2GHz G5 as well (what you're upgrading from, I assume), so I'm especially curious how much faster the 2.7 feels in every day operation. Plus: is it any more loud or quiet?? Thanks!

The 2.7Ghz definitely feels faster than my 2Ghz machine. I noticed that the OS seemed "snappier" immediately. Obviously this isn't scientific measurement, but I could tell it was faster.

The new G5 is whipser quiet, which is to say it is more quiet than the 2ghz machine. Also there is no pulsing noise coming from the 2.7 machine like so many 2Ghz owners experienced... myself included.

I'm curious, why didn't you use FW800 for the initial transfer?

Hey, on the positive side it means no need for an ADC to DVI adaptor for the 2nd jack.. though I still might definitely not do it *nod* I'd have to ebay both my cards lol.. hrmmmmm

From what I've read here, that makes the 2.7 MUCH quieter than the 2.5. Now I'm very interested.

Me three ! Takes me 5 years to afford a new machine (as you can see by my sig).
I'm going for it now though, just a few more weeks....to buy a machine that's half the cost of your fancy 2.7 x800.

Congrats buy they way! gotta love the power ! 2.7 with x800 is sweet !

Hmm, looks pretty nice. I'm on a budget. May have to either buy a refurb or get a Mini. Congrats, you will get many years of great Mac performance. I still have a G4/400 AGP working hard and an upgraded Performa 6360 with a G3 card doing Photoshop work.

Isn't the new Mac smell great? :-)

zerock, the one negative about my iMac is the widespread fan noise issue, but not every iMac G5 owner experiences that problem. The Power Mac posters here seem to think the latest versions are quiet. If noise is a factor for you, compare both models yourself and then decide.

I don't recall it saying anything specific on Apple's website. Maybe it might state it in the developer's notes.

I'll call Apple to see if it works. The D-Link USB module works perfectly. I have connected to my cinema displays rear usb port so that it isn't visible.

The Bluetooth BTO or upgrade kit for the new G5s are indeed Bluetooth 2.0+EDR. You can see this page right here on the forums for further information.

And congratulations riotge@r. A wonderful purchase... my X800 arrives Friday and I will finally be able to put it through its paces. We should compare notes and tweaks.

Our similar setups are quite odd though. I almost bought that Dell monitor last week but decided on a ViewSonic VP201B. Couldn't bring myself to support the Evil Eviler Evilest Empire. Nice desk too.
