Only two pics. The close up is a different pic than the one shown in the link.

It also looks like the nano did not survive the extraction process and the big IC on the back is cracked badly.

It is.

But that plastic packaging can't be cheaper than the old boxes for Apple unless size realy DOES matter.

It does when you are trying to ship thousands of these around the world. You can fit twice as many in a shipping container with smaller packaging.

The packaging may be smaller, but it must cost more to make.
It is also not very environmentally friendly.
The old box was biodegradable, this is plastic and will never rot down in landfill.

Ironically, Steve mentioned somewhere in his presentation that the new box is especially environment friendly IIRC. Was there some styrofoam in the old box or something?

The new box was supposed to be environmentally friendly because of the significant amount of fossil fuels that would be saved shipping them around the world, supposedly.
