As for Long file names, every MacOS since 7.0 has supported 256 character file descriptions in the Get Info box of files, and those comments on MacOS 7.5.5 or later get preserved even after rebuilding the desktop. Earlier versions of Operating system than 8.5 you would open the Views control panel to see the Comments field next to the file, and be able to sort by those comments, and 8.5 and later, the Edit menu, preferences, Views tab would give you the ability to select the comments field. As for direct 256 character file names in 9.0, I am not aware of any changes. If there are, do they apply to folders as well, and is MacLinkPlus and PC Exchange now able to see that change, to allow Windows 95 and 98 saved files on PC floppies read out in long file name format? Please e-mail replies to the address below.
Sincerely,

I have noticed the same. Could it be that you need to reformat your HD before changes take effect? Would make sense since filenames are within directories (?) and not within the file themselves.

The OS supports 256 character file names, but the Finder doesn't. The OS support is part of the transition to X.
