Interesting. The only Mac that is really due for updates is the MP - did Apple really get those very early Sandy Bridge-EP CPUs?
Of course it could be another round for the MBP, but I'm not sure what the update would be.
It could also be some minor iPod updates, but I think they're all getting updated at the same event in early September or whenever.

The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.

I'm thinking maybe it is just an "oh crap" moment; or a new layout. Can't even get most of Apple to load from outside the main page.

Interesting. But, Apple has been known to take the store down for minor updates, so it could be nothing (or, almost nothing).

Its not a Mac Pro. They just posted a new set of marketing assets for the Mac Pro on ASW. Can't imagine they'd bother if there was a new one due any second.

maybe its just going to be a link to buy Job's biography. one of several "minor" updates, as mentioned above, that requires the entire store to be down for an hour.

I'm starting to think that it is actually a real problem. It's not usually down this long.

The UK store has been down for hours and I'm not even getting the post-it page. Just "Failed to open page". Something odd definitely going on. The UK store went down before the US one too if that means much.
Again, not going to be the Mac Pro, still no new CPUs for it.

Apple has released Macs before with no known new CPUs prior to the release of those Macs... because they got custom CPUs or new CPUs early. Not saying it's gonna happen though as it may just be the unplugged hamster thing.
It's odd that I can't even get the Teh Apple Store iz down!!! sticky anymore.

Wowzers, this is a lengthy amount of downtime. Is the iPhone 5 hatching early late?

The lack of CPUs was extra evidence on top of my previous post. They'd be getting those new Xeons awful early.
Unless they got a custom Core i7 that allowed for two per logic board. Again, seems unlikely to me. P?

I predict we will be disappointed by whatever changes are made. Unless the iphone 5 comes out in which case you can expect to find me in line ordering one.

It will be hugely anti-climatic if the store reopens with no changes to show, as has been the case a number of times in the past.

This reminds me of the time Moe was looking vainly for something at a blank wall of his bar and got Homer to pay him for the privilege of looking too.
Also, some funny pics were found here, but what happened to the old Teh Store Is Downn OMGWTFBBQ pic? Sorry if I'm inaccurately describing it.

Still down for me and are there any other sites that have to be taken down for periodic maintenance? Do they remove the engines in their cars when they get the oil changed?

Paging besson: besson, as a web designer (please forgive me if I'm using the wrong term for your professional classification), can you tell us why the most valuable corporation in the world has to resort to pulling its entire online Store site to do maintenance? Do they have no redundancy in the system? Isn't that highly unprofessional?

Maybe the hamster wasn't just unplugged? Maybe it actually died, and it took a while to find a suitable replacement?

If you mean the current Sandy Bridge Core i7, then no, sorry. There is not even a single QPI link on the Core i7, so there won't be a dual-socket version. Getting Sandy Bridge-EP now would be VERY early, but not entirely impossible. There is enough info leaking on them that they are certainly around as late engineering samples.

My professional classification is "Jesus", please start using it...
I have no clue why Apple does this. Somebody said a long time ago that this was a limitation of WebObjects, but I would assume that Apple would have migrated away from WebObjects about eleventy billion years ago.
I agree, it is very unprofessional, but it is comforting that I'm not the only one that finds this pretty lame. I'm sure you could go back many years and find me babbling about this.
You guys really need to start taking me seriously, use Big Mac as your guide.

Apple Store outage related to larger 'net issues? | TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog
Apple was not the only company getting hit with large issues today. VoIP carrier Ooma is reporting a nationwide outage although some California customers are reporting that things are beginning to get back to normal. John Gruber's Daring Fireball blog was down part of the morning, and readers and bloggers have been reporting that Twitter was visited by the Fail Whale, Facebook was temporarily faceless, and various ISPs are having issues.

On the other hand, do many other consumer companies have such a cultish fanbase that reads so much into web site downtime?

I've never understood why Apple, who has such intense OCD about controlling their message... allows every single one of their big events to be seen by their biggest fans through the lens of jaded tech bloggers farting out truncated summaries on flaky crashing live blogs.
Why not just live stream the events? Surely it can't be that hard for the worlds most valuable tech company?

Well, there must be something that works better than this silly liveblogging that seems to drop all the time. Twitter is the only thing that works (so far).
