I'm gonna be alone with my dad for this next week, and we're gonna rent a movie each evening, and i'm trying to cover all those great movies that I never saw because I grew up without TV.
We've got 4 days, and so far i've got Schindlers list, Saving Private Ryan, and Sin City.
If 300 or Apocalypto were out yet, one of those would for sure be the 4th movie, so that should give you an idea of what i'm looking for.
I want something on an epic scale. Something like Gladiator or Lord of the Rings, full of Battle's and war, and preferebly set in a medieval type era. I don't know many movies, so help me out here.
Chances are I haven't seen it yet. What are your suggestions?
Thanks.

Wow thanks. Four movies that are all rated over 8.0 on imdb.
I think Apocalypse Now is it!
Thanks!

Hmmm, I don't know if this fits, but if he likes Sci-fi, Try the Star Wars 6 movies. That will tie up a day in itself.
Oops, I notice you only need one night.
Try just one of the Star War movies, or better yet, Alien. Alien is a great movie.

Now, Star Wars I have seen.. haha. Alien i've seen parts of, and It's a little to creepy for me.
I think after watching the Braveheart trailer, i'm set on that.
Feel free to offer more suggestions however, I might change my mind.

Well, we're already in the middle of those. We're halfway through season 5. No way can that be done in one day, let alone a week.
And I think i've settled on Braveheart. It looks GREAT! Rated R for medival violence! Exactly what I wanted. AND it got 5 oscars.
I'll come back to this thread the next time I need advice. My work will already be cut out for me! Thanks!

The Patriot (Mel Gipson version) is another great war movie. Full Metal Jacket is highly recommened in my book also. I can't believe I left that out.
Army of Darkness, Kingdom of Heaven, The Last Samurai. I'll think of more later.

Full Metal Jacket and Saving Private Ryan both have my vote. Sin City is also sweet. I saw Thank You for Smoking recently. It was very good.

Braveheart was a good choice. However, skip Sin City and get Apocalypse Now. Sin City is good, but it isn't THAT good. Apocalypse Now is a classic.

Alright, i'm pretty sure i'm dumping Saving Private Ryan and Sin City. I kinda wanted to see Sin City though, cause i'm gonna see 300 when it comes out, and they're both based on graphic novels by the same guy.
That opens up 2 spots. So that'll make it Schindlers List, Braveheart, and Apocalypse Now I guess. Now I've got one spot open again!
What do you guys think of Passion of the Christ?

Don't drop either of those movies. They're both excellent and if you like war movies, Saving Ryan's Privates is a really good one.

Braveheart is a good choice given your parameters. If you're into a somewhat older movie, I'd recommend Lawrence of Arabia.

If I were in your situation I'd set up a REALLY long firewire cable attached to an iSight so I could watch naked girls shower. That'd make the time fly by!
But that's just me.

Crap.
Try The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) instead. Similar subject, much better film.
As for war films, I think Apocalypse Now is pretty much the only one that's worthwhile watching. Or, if you want something lighter, try Kelly's Heroes (1970), great flick as well.

Das Boot (as has been said already)
The English Patient
Band of Brothers (just AWESOME and multiple episodes, all good)
Rob Roy (better than Braveheart IMHO)
Shogun (the original version without the horrible voiceovers)

Full Metal Jacket - it's two movies in one!
Also, I'm surprised Band of Brothers has only been mentioned once. It's truly fantastic, although it's long enough that you wouldn't need the other movies.

If you or your father have any respect for history, don't watch Braveheart. It's complete bollocks. It represents the Hollywoodisation (is that a word?) of history at its worst.
Saving Private Ryan is a technically good war film, in that is shows that war is hell (but really, we all know that by now). Much, much better, and released the same year, is The Thin Red Line - a far more reflective and deep film (but is quite slow). I would recommend Band of Brothers over Private Ryan; same technical skill but with more characters and less star-focused.
A classic WW2 war film would be A Bridge too Far. That is epic, fairly accurate and provides a well-rounded view of the events. Also, there is The Longest Day about DDay.
Apocalypse Now is certainly an excellent film, but really about war. It's more like an analogy for life's struggles.
For a new suggestion, how about some of the classic Japanese war epics? Kurosawa films.

Apocalypse Now and The Thin Red Line are ****... in my opinion. If you and your pop wanna have good ole' fashion head smashing fun, lean towards some of the dumber suggestions in this thread. If you're looking for a true classic, get the newly restored version of The Seven Samurai. Have no fear of the b&w or subtitles. Before you know it you will be so engrossed in the tale that the hours will fly by. Doesn't get any better.
