I keep getting the message that my G3 system is not compatible whenever I try to use the original MacOS CDs that came with my new G4.

I also have an IMac and a Performa that are running 9.0.4 (OS loaded from a purchased 9.0 CD + downloaded 9.0.4 upgrade) and I will probably want to be able to use the "software restore" ability of the G4 Os disc on these at some time too.

What is the story here? Can I not use this G4 disc on anything but a G4?

The syten CD that comes with a particular computer should be used only on that computer. If you buy the generic system CD, then it will have the components necessary to install in all of the computers with which it is compatible. That's just not the case with machine-specific system CDs.
And that's true too.--Shakespeare, King Lear

you might try using the progam "wishiwere". basically, it fools the installer into thinking the machine's something it's not. you specify what you'd like your machine to be and it changes the gestalt value to whatever's appropriate and the installer can't tell the difference.

if you're going to try this, make sure you get a recent version that includes G4 support.

There should be a disk image somewhere on the Restore disk containing what the installer puts on your hard drive. When I used my iMac Restore CD to install 9.0 onto my beige G3, I reformatted the drive (after backing up important stuff), booted from the iMac restore disc, and copied the contents of the disk image to my hard drive (just dragged all the folders in). Easy enough.
And it works like a charm.

Good luck!
