You should be able to boot from the XP CD, and then just follow the installer.
I'm not sure where you're stuck. A little more info would help. Do you have the hard drive image made for XP yet?

I have made the drive for XP about 3GB and when starting the set up screen comes on showing it has connected with the CD software XP then goes completely black and just hangs. I have even tried to install a smaller system like Win ME and all I get is a blinking cursor and no result from my keboard at all.

It sounds like a video issue. I installed WinXP Pro without any problem on both version 5 and 6. Meanwhile, the latest version for VPC 5 is 5.0.4. It took me around 5hrs to complete the installation on my iMac 500 (upgraded Rev. A, OS X 10.1.x, v5.0.4), but it screamed on my DP 1.25.. took just less than 30mins.

Haven't tried it on OS 9.2
