hi,

my hard drive has developed bad blocks, and seeing as how i can't afford a new one, i was wondering if anyone had suggestions on whether or not this will work. i plan on partitioning the hd (40G) into 10 partitions and then trying to format each disk. i plan to do this to find out which portion of the HD is bad, and once each area is checked, re-partition to exclude those areas as free space.

would this work? do bad blocks suggest that the whole harddrive mechanism is failing and i'm just putting off the inevitable only slightly?

Yes, bad blocks which have "developed" and haven't been there from the beginning do indeed suggest that the whole drive will be failing soon. You should never continue to use such a hard disk after you have rescued all your important files.

Can you afford DiskWarrior? It can work wonders. If not, backup and start saving for an external or new HD and save yourself the trouble of all of that partitioning because a failing HD is a failing HD.

i was able to backup all my files. the drive, i believe, has a three-year warranty, and i bought it a year ago. not sure if i need to contact IBM or OWC (where i bought it from). this is the second drive that has failed in my pismo in 4 years.

While DiskWarrior is wonderful, it can do nothing
about bad blocks (nor does it claim to).

Also half true... because a partitioned HD with
several systems on it (and a rash of bad blocks)
can often be booted from at least one of its
volumes. An affected single OS on a single volume
is MORE often useful only as a doorstop.
