My iMac just died today. I was working on it and started having problems with my mouse and a general slowness. I turned it off hoping it was a software issue and upon restart, well, it wouldn't. I get my happy chime then a nice bright white screen.

We're about 4 months out of warranty. I'm-a-gonna hafta buy a new one, huh?

Any thoughts or similar experiences?

Pete

Have you tried booting from an OS or install disk (hold c at boot)?

I guess you did the whole unplug it and wait thing?

After a power failure (cut off my computer in the middle of something - this was before I bought that battery that prevents this), my 24" white iMac wouldn't start. Not even a white screen.

I unplugged it, and a few hours later it was back.

I'm guessing your hard drive simply died. This generally causes slowness (which gets worse over time) until one day it just won't boot anymore. Since your Mac chimes, that means it's passing "POST", the power on self test. This means all major system components are working okay - the hard drive isn't included in this test (except to see if one is present).

I would fix the current Mac, but if you're going to get a new one for some reason, I'd highly recommend the 24" or 27" iMac. I just got a 27" and the screen is pretty mind blowing!

Good luck, either way.

Boot with the alt key held down. If it boots to startup manager its probably your HDD. If you still get no image at all on screen (startup manager should eventually show an arrow icon even if it can't see a drive but give it time), then connect up an external display. If you get nothing on that either, chances are its the logic board. If external video works it might be the LCD.

You should also reset the SMC and try different RAM configurations to eliminate a faulty module before writing off anything else. If you have access to another Mac, you can also test firewire target disk mode to check the HDD.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....
