No. The choice is entirely up to your management. There are plenty of salaried people who earn overtime (1x or 1.5x). Salaried/exempt really just means you're exempt from overtime laws.

I'm salary, and work a 4 on 2 off work wheel. But I also earn overtime based on the rate (yearly salary / 26 / 80 * 1.5)

Since I’m a student, all work I do is ‘extra money’.

However, I consider my ‘regular’ study job ‘my job’, so that doesn’t quite count. I work as a case handler/assistance coordinator (sounds so fancy) for Scandinavia’s biggest alarm central, which on average (I’m obviously paid entirely hourly, since I’m a student worker and have to fit in my studies, too) pays about $1,500 to $2,500 per month (outside peak season, which is summer, where I work a lot and make about twice that).

For those times when that just doesn’t cut it for the crack habit and hustlers, I do a bit of freelance interpreting for The National Danish Police, which is a very irregular job that I don’t do more than a few times a month at the most (they just call when they pick up some Chinese miscreants of one kind or another, and if I’m available, I hurry to whatever precinct is calling and help the constable(s) interrogate the charged, translating between Danish and Chinese), but which pays extremely well for a student job (daytime rate is $96.50 per hour, after 5 P.M. it’s double-up, so about $193 per hour).

Having just started studying at the IT University of Copenhagen, I’m hoping to make website-making an extra freelance income, as well.

No, that is normal for hourly workers not salaried workers. Hourly workers work N hours and get paid X for doing it. Work over 40 hours a week and you are required by law to get paid overtime (1.5x your hourly rate).

Salaried workers normally work a minimum number of hours, but extra hours are generally part of the deal and you are not regularly paid overtime for it. They are not required to pay you overtime... some do, most don't.

The difference is also in countries.

The more "socialist" countries (i.e. Europe ) tend to have laws that overtime needs to be compensated even for salaried as long as you are not considered part of the "managerial" class.

In the US, typically only the clerical salaried jobs are eligible for overtime.

I get a fixed salary for my job, irrespective of how many hours I do.

I think technically I'm contracted for 37.5, but I work in sales, and would never get anything done, or hit any of my targets if I did that, so I just do the hours that I have to in order to get things done. 70% of my salary is bonus based though, so it's in my interest to do the hours. Just gets a bit tedious when I end up working 75 hours a week all the time!

If I have to work a Saturday, like I did this weekend, I can take a half day in lieu, but again, only if I'm not busy.

Interesting comments. Perhaps I should switch to a company with more of a performance based pay structure (i.e. paid OT). I have not been with this company long enough, but I think their bonus is once a year and fairly meager. At my last company, the pay was salary based, but the OT was pay + ~$7 which is a far cry from 1.5x pay or 2x pay which was lame by itself. However, the accompanying medical plan and 401k plan was pretty nice. I have been thinking of switching back just for the perks and benefits.

Well the eMac was going to be my computer, but I saw the G5 for $450 and I knew I had to have it. I didn't end up liking it (the damn fans were whining) and I sold it for $799 plus shipping. Then I found a MacBook for $650, and sold it for $840. Basically, wait it out until there is a great deal, and then sell high.
